How about having locked doors - you would have to use your axe to smash them open to gain entry. Maybe the noise could attract lots of nearby zombies. Houses with locked doors may contain zombies and / or more valuable loot.

That would be quite cool, or maybe boarded up doors that you could smash through!

I just want doors that open the correct way....inwards lol

There is no correct way. E.g. doors in pubs have to open outward, so that they don't block the exit in case of a fire, panic, ...

 

Keys+lockable doors would also be nice, to deny access to a room, or trap someone inside. But unfortunately this can be circumvented by server hopping...
