zombies everywhere

I'm new, I have seen videos of others playing. I just started and there are zombies everywhere. I have no weapon to defend myself. How can I search a building with a zombie around every corner? Is there a map button to see where I am?

Zombies everywhere is a good sign, it is very likely that there hasn't been a player nearby, especially if the doors to buildings are closed.

 

Attract the attention of a few zombies, run away eg to the woods and try to break the line of sight there. Then you can return and search the town in peace (apart from other players).

 

There are maps you can find as items ingame, but you can also use a map like the one on dayzdb.
