Improved door mechanics

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I have been having a think about how doors work in DayZ and think it could benefit with an update as I'm sure many other people do. I couldn't find any discussion on it though so thought I'd start a thread.

I first realised I wasn't happy with doors when it suddenly dawned on me that doors are silent in the world. They don't creak, the don't click, they don't slam, nothing. Changing this alone would make a huge difference. If there were locked doors they could obviously make a noise for that too so they don't just look like painted onto the building but actually part of the world.

Another thought I had though which would vastly improve the game in my opinion would be to use the Amnesia door opening/closing mechanism. Where you have full control over how much to open the door and how fast as well. This would give people the option to creep into a building slowly and quietly opening the doors and peeking before going through. Or to just run and gun slamming doors open and closed quickly making much more noise. This in turn could obviously attract players or zombies.

Different kind of doors could make different noises too. A more modern door would be quieter than and old rickety wooden one with a dodgy lock that clicks very loud for instance. But the huge fire station doors would be much louder and give your position away even more.

Just a few thoughts on the matter, anyone else got anything to add?

Cheers

I love the Amnesia door opening mechanic, but I don't believe it's possible within the RV engine.

I don't think the amnesia mechanic would work but I most definitely agree with doors needing a sound when opened/closed, gives a reason to close doors behind you when entering a building and makes opening a door in a city a risk/reward mechanic...

Same. I agree that at a minimum it would be nice if they actually made some sort of noise. I would also like it if the interaction distance for doors was increased according to door/gate size so I don't get slammed in the face or risk getting KO'd by them (but maybe that's mod specific) as I have to hit the button and run just in case

I'm just happy opening them doesn't break my god damn legs.

Anything else is a pure bonus really :)

opening doors must have a sound in the minimum.

then a nice feature approach that might be realistic to develop:

have the option with the door opening icon

1. fast and loud (alarms zombies within lets say 50m)

2. slow and silent

then if you want notch it up you put a random (20%) loud sound in the silent approach, since sometimes you are not able to figure out the mechanism and it sounds off anyways. "crank... bad luck bandit!"

everything is theoretically possible. they can rewrite what they want, but its taking time.

Amnesia should be the ultimate goal for door mechanics, although a little bit of a tricky one considering you have no weapons in amnesia, whereas in DayZ trying to open a door with say an M4, controlling both the door and M4 with mouse wouldn't really work at the same time, and can't use the mouse wheel either due to the action key and any other button combo would be a little too awkward.

The idea of a simple fast and slow opening door option in the action menu though would work nicely (as mentioned by Spearbeers above), especially with the 20% chance of slow still being loud too. Perhaps drop it down to maybe 10% though as I imagine it would happen too often. Something I'm hoping for later down the line, but hopefully at least some sounds will be coming soon.
