gibonez 3633 Posted January 9, 2014 (edited) Before I get started watch the following short video so you can understand what the difference between first focal plane and second focal plane is. Now that you understand what first focal plane is let me begin to explain it's importance. For the longest time the arma series has prided itself with being a combat simulator but it has had one cardinal flaw. Every single glass in the game have been second focal plane optics. This has been detrimental to gameplay and has not allowed any sort of range estimation using ranging reticles in game. First focal plane scopes allow variable power scopes to have accurate range estimation at any magnification and more importantly accurate hold overs regardless of magnification. Here is another video explaining it. Really hope Rocket and team take advantage of First focal plane scopes and allow users to accurately range targets using real world information on mildots and hold overs. http://www.primalrights.com/forum/article.php?a=4789Good read on the subject. BelMarduk 169 Posted January 9, 2014 In the MOD, all the scopes were easy to range targets with. The only 'tricky' scope was on the DMR. If you know how to use a scope, then (as long as even ArmaII's style of scope mechanics) ranging is very simple, and quick... and if you in a second looking through a scope on any gun in the MOD couldn't determine with absolute acceptable accuracy, then you really dont know how to use a scope. Sure they were easy to range targets using bs mechanics that were specific to the mod. What I hope first focal plane and accurate mildots would do is allow real world knowledge to be applied to the game and allowing real world information be useful in game. Pretty much would require people to learn mildot formula to range targets and more importantly it would allow people to range targets far more accurately than is currently possible.
The_Man 393 Posted January 9, 2014 Nice! I like this idea. I hope they implement it down the road. This game could really use a change like this. I've never really had a problem with the current system but I wouldn't mind having the choice between first and second focal plane optics. I'll never say no to more gear. GotAWarInTheHead 16 Posted January 9, 2014 http://www.shooterready.com/lrs.html There you go everything you need to know and more importantly a place to practice. Thanks, man! I didn't know that much math is involved. I'm glad I'm a math tutor! Haha
gibonez 3633 Posted January 9, 2014 Thanks, man! I didn't know that much math is involved. I'm glad I'm a math tutor! Haha It can be. For gaming purposes it would prove to be amazing. Say you are a bandit with a sniper rifle or hunting rifle with a variable power first focal plane optic with mildot reticles. You could write up a range charge with ranges to all the land marks in your area without a range finder by simply measuring the size of known objects with your mildots.
