Dayz and SteamOS when?

Recommended Posts

nevaaar, ahahahaha.

Seriously dude, they are trying to get DayZ throught the alpha stage, maybe after that they'll think about a port, but I'd rather have DayZ stay a PC exclusive. Or mixed servers.

Yah, no shit bro, I read the specs too. And btw, Xbox and PS are PC's too... because on what else are you going to play it? A mechanical "computer" maybe? But that wasn't what this was about, I said that I wan't BIS games to stay PC exclusives. Now what part of that didn't you understand?

for far too much of the masses "windows' means PC  :( :(

EDIT take this quote of Weparo...

...as in first stating the 'accurate' PC as being personal Computer (and emphasizing the 'computer') but then making instance that the term PC is meaning 'windows' by implication... and he doesn't even realize that.

There seems to be a lot of confusion here about the Steambox and SteamOS.  The Steambox will natively support Linux but it will also act as a SteamStreamBox.  It will utilize your local home network to stream Windows/Mac games from your Windows/Mac to your Steambox/TV.

DayZ would not have to be "ported."  The game would have to be streamed from a local PC.  The Steambox in it's current state doesn't support game streaming yet though.

Though Rocket has said they want dayz to come out on other systems eventually ( including linux and therefore SteamOS ), It wont be until the game is a full release which is expected to take 12-18 months from now.

Probably won't run natively though because the Real Virtuality engine isn't designed for OpenGL it's made for DirectX

Thank you, i tough this was a forum for dayz morons. You dont need a steambox to have steam os, steam os is an os, simple. Maybe i should have said dayz in linux. Edited by (NDA) AJ

Didn't even think of this, so yeah, that'll be an issue.

wut?

Computer = something that computes, adds, substracts and mutliplies numbers.

PC = Personal computer = A computer that is privately owned, vast majority of these being electric binary systems.

Windows = A OS made by Microsoft coorperation.

Consoles = PC's that are all made with the same specifications and sold to idiots that think that they are a good deal (money wise).

(In)famous steambox(es) = Consoles.

With above definitions to clarify, let me rephrase my first post :

The dev team will probably try to get SA throught its alpha stage first, maybe even beta before foccusing on a console release, be it the steambox, the PS or Xbox.

The engine doesn't support Linux, so I wouldn't count on it happening.  It's possible they might update RV4(Arma3) or make RV5 Linux compatible, but it would probably be a waste of resources to go back to RV3(Arma2) and add Linux support.

Engine runs like turds on windows, imagine how it will run on a different OS that needs to emulate, and doesn't have GPU driver support for shit.

The confusion you seem to have is in thinking that the SteamBox is a console. The SteamBox is a computer, that will perform computer functions and run computer games. It runs an operating system based on the Linux kernel called SteamOS. Users are free to take their personal computer and turn it into a SteamBox by installing the SteamOS onto their PC. As it utilizes GNU/Linux this means it is unable to natively support Microshaft Windows specific games. This does not make it a "console" it is a fully powered PC. The confusion is understandable given that Valve has gone out of their way to market this machine as a living room console.

Linux users will usually not "emulate" the Windows operating system but will instead utilize WINE. WINE is a compatibility layer that tries to offer things necessary to run a Windows program to the GNU/Linux operating system. Granted this is far from ideal and can result in numerous bugs and glitches but it in no way offers the performance degradation associated with something being emulated. In fact I've frequently experienced better performance running some games in WINE rather than natively on my Windows partition (although just as often I experience bugs and glitches that make games unplayable, usually due to the poor GPU driver support you mentioned).

Wait, you're allowed to install steam OS on your pc? Dafuq. Why did they "reveal" these 13/14 omionus steam boxes? I thought the deal was to lure console gamer to steam, and now they are just selling PC's like every other company out there?

Now I'm confused :D :D :D

Yes it is possible to install the SteamOS onto your PC. The pre-built machines are mostly for people who don't already have a specialized gaming rig, or who don't have the capabilities to build their own machines. It also offers a pre-configured Linux gaming machine to anyone who wants one. I think the original premise was to try and get more of the console gamers to begin gaming on PC feeling more comfortable with the machine thanks to the improvements in the Steam Big Picture mode. Sadly the main reason I've always preferred console gaming is because if I purchase a console game I know it will work as intended on my console. By offering such a huge range of different machines the Steam Box fails to offer a set standard and thus encourages more of the "can I run it?" mentality that keeps me going back to my Playstation time after time.

I'd love to see Linux support. I use Linux Mint Debian myself and it currently is my fafourite client os (is awesome, 100% freedom, not to mention that it is 1000 times more secure than Windows, there are no viruses, say goodbye to malware scanner ^^).

So please dear devs, make this happen - and 2014 is the year of the linux distros. B)

Ahm, sorry for double post, but atm its not necessary nor recommended to use steamos at this stage.

However, there's a steam client version for linux and games which actually do support linux can be downloaded and played just like you would do under windows. There even is Big Picture support.

I'd suggest Linux Mint with codecs, since it already supports media functionalities without having to know anything in advance (There even is the adobe flash player packed in). It's a live dvd, ready to use and runs completely out of the ram, no install needed (iso image downloading, burning, starting, testing...). However, since it relies on dvd drive, it of cause is quite slow compared to an actual installation.

(btw, the terminal command to install steam just is "apt-get install steam", without quotes, you should have root rights and an installed linux - then there it goes.)
