It is a common torture method, and if continued long enough will lead to death by itself alone...or suicide by the victim, if possible. Also, responses may vary...a more sane individual might just attack the oppressors like a wild animal, if given the opportunity...guess not a good explanation for an epidemic, but for a local scenario...gruesome, though! A warning though, it's the stuff waking nightmares are made of. I'm inspired to smash my brain into this visually, and draw the effects of Nikolayev gas on an unsuspecting countryside.
