Quick Question About Servers.

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I was thinking of renting a VPS. If the VPS COULD handle two servers. Is there any possible way to make them 12 hours off from one another? So Nighttime players can play during the day and Daytime players can play at night if they wanted to? We have many members that play DayZ, Just half are 3rd shift workers. I want to make the game enjoyable for both. I myself like to play at night... Thanks for anyone that helps.

Depends on the specs of the VPS, but you'd be better off ordering two separate ones so you can offset the time on each. The devs don't like it when you fiddle with the time outside the system clock itself as far as I know. For an example, have one VDS at GMT-6 and the other VDS at GMT+6.

The question I have for you is: Are your familiar with running servers? I'm assuming since your renting a VPS it'll be unmanaged, it's no easy undertaking if you don't have the experience. I'd recommend going with a managed VDS provided by some hosts here if your skills aren't up to par. :)

Going to warn you straight off the bat, there's a high chance that because it's a VPS you'll be denied as a host. Just giving you a heads up before you part with the money (the below is taken from the Server Hosts FAQ). Probably a good idea to find out if you'd be good to go before renting.

Not 100% sure on your issue though. Mainly wanted to bring the below to your attention.

Can I host on a VPS?

Many ISPs sell Virtual Private Servers (VPS) with the assumption that any given server will be idle for the majority of the time, thus allowing them to host several VPSes on the same physical hardware.

A DayZ server will consume a lot of processing power on a regular basis, which makes it difficult to host DayZ servers on a VPS.

Most VPSes will also not give you a commitment on processing power, but instead provided it on an as-available basis. If the physical hardware is running a lot of processes, your VPS may not get the required CPU power to run a DayZ server.

So, in almost all cases, no. You cannot run a DayZ server on a VPS.

Yeah I wouldn't artificially try to alter the time for one DayZ server on a box with two DayZ servers running on it. We've already seen server(s) get blacklisted for doing so (all daylight for example) because it mucked up the hive.

Hence why on second thoughts, I edited the suggestion out of my post :P

Thanks for the heads up.

ok.. it seems like not a good idea. From what I am reading here.

I thank you all for the fast reply. I will get a VPS and just run one server. Seems it will just make things easy.

Thanks again. :)

Lol, looks like we were all over that issue. ;)

As for VPSes, it's honestly all about who you get it from. Our server runs on a VDS and it works really well. The major thing is that it's running a virtualization solution which gives you dedicated resources, and not something like OpenVZ which you share resources (and hosters love to oversell the hell out of the boxes).

Pretty much, make sure the virtual server is on quality higher-end hardware (with isolated resources for your instance), the box has bandwidth for it, and that they have a good track record of not overselling. It should fine no problem. But I understand where Pallidum is coming from, there are just too many VPS providers out there that oversell or don't provide enough horsepower for a game like this. It's easier to just say avoid them. ;)
