Dooms_Day (DayZ) 8 Posted January 7, 2014 Lets say you've been pretty successful in playing for an extended amount of time and been pumping alot of 5.56 through that m4 at those new spawns. Without proper lubricants, cleaning supplies, your rifle will be getting hot and gritty. I think it would be awesome having to maintain your weapon throughout the game and have it deteriorate and cause jams or lower accuracy. You've already got the option to customize the accessories of your m4. Later on in the game when we are getting more weapons involved into the game, the player has the responsibility to maintain your weapon or lose it and have to scrounge another off a corpse(and it may be cruddy as well) or do proper cleaning and maintenance and give it a long life cycle. Fire off have CLP and maybe boresnakes to clean the inside your m4 (later on different rifles and pistols of course). Then we can also find and keep bolts and bolt carriers on our person incase we need to replace a damaged one. Cleaning supplies would be 1 or 2 spaces unless you acquire a cleaning kit pouch then it would be like 2 or maybe 4 spaces.bolts would be 1 space and bolt carrier would be 1 unless you get both and then you can combine them into 1 space, that way it doesn't take alot of room. Your thoughts, is something like this already in planning, if not, what do you guys think?
aodqw97 78 Posted January 7, 2014 Yes I like the idea.Similar to the weapon degradation and jamming in STALKER, although you don't have the option to clean the weapon it stalker. Could be a nice addition although I think only going to appeal to the realists.
Dchil 829 Posted January 7, 2014 You have my beans, though i think it has been suggested before. There should be different types of cleaning product and ways to clean. There are millions of ways to clean a firearm. So one way could be you need:A patch holderpatchescleaning rodBalistol (brand name cleaning product which is apparently very good) or another you could need Patch holderbronze brushpatchesCLPcleaning rod. There should also be cleaning kits(should be able to make a cleaning kit aswell). In rifles like the Mosin, M4 and AK series there should be a possibility of them spawning with one in them as it was, and probably still is, common for there to be places for you to put a cleaning kit in and for them to be issued with one. Carpoor 8 Posted January 7, 2014 The amount of rounds needed to be pumped through an actual rifle to degrade parts like the firing pin, bolt, bolt carrier, buffer spring, rifle bore, etc would never be reached in a single spawn with the weapons currently in the SA. Plus, you'd need to tack on cleaning every magazine you have to prevent jams and have fresh ammo that's in good condition. Shooting the 5 year old ammo laying around in the game that's been collecting dust and soaking up moister would do more harm than not cleaning your rifle after you squeeze 30-40 rounds off at someone. As for engaging someone in a firefight, a jam means you clear, re-chamber, and fire. A mechanical failure means you better have buddies to cover you or your a free treasure chest. Weapon maintenance can be a fun and interesting mechanic for sure. But the execution would have to be very careful so that it doesn't end up being a tedious gimmicky chore that lacks or contradicts realism and can unexpectedly lead to the loss of one's current spawn's effort.
JuX 72 Posted January 7, 2014 (edited) Already posted this idea on other suggestion section before this DayZ section came up. However my suggestion takes the weapon maintenance a step further to add weapon assemblingto the game, where you have to break up your weapon to clean it completely.
