kevv87 7 Posted January 6, 2014 (edited) Hello forum/devs. In addition to the thread KoS placed i have an idea of having an empty map that will fill in as you will travel through the map. It will make an objective (fill your map) plus its like real life (if you've been somewhere you will know your way around). It would also be possible to see where people have been once you stole they're map. I think it will add an interesting form of gameplay. Feel free to post more suggestions and excuse me for my english. Edited January 6, 2014 by kevv87
frosti 2165 Posted January 6, 2014 Just make it so you need to have pen and paper with you to do that.

twingunz 308 Posted January 6, 2014 (edited) are you saying like a hud display map i'm 90% sure they're trying to have no HUD whatsoever in the final product, if you could draw freely on paper you could draw you own map i'll support that but as for an updating explorer type map , i do not condone apologies!Edit: OH EM JEE you got my 200 post virginity it's always sweeter after the 200th time congrats Edited January 6, 2014 by twingunz

It will be like you'll find a piece of paper and a pen. And then it will be automatically updated in your inventory. (Drawing style) but you will need to equip the map to actually see it. Like it is now.

From a personal perspective it's not something I'd use, I don't think it's very realistic. That is a personal opinion mind, for me the real draw of this game is what you don't have, and what you don't know, and what you have to do in order to understand and construct a picture of the the world. I think it's great that with the best of intentions I can get horribly lost in the middle of a wood without a compass and map. I like that if I had a watch in the mod I could still work out north. At the moment I've been creating abstract maps (well, that's up until last night until I found a compass and a map) in noviee sobor* so I can navigate the roads between various towns inland. Even though I wouldn't use it I'd still rather not see it implemented for those that would, I don't think I'd like other players to have a magical ability to remember the route back to NW Airbase, or wherever they'd like to get to, simply because they managed to stumble onto it three weeks ago with the same character. There's a reason that this is being asked for, and that's because to remember that kind of information is not possible without assistance, whether that be by repeated journeys, or an offline map as you spawn. I like that I have a character and that I am that character, if you want a map either as a object in game or a HUD display, then try creating your own with just the tools your character has. It is hard, again whether it's a mental map or a written one. If any sort of created map would be available in game I'd like to see a player created object that was stored in your inventory. Until you get an actual map I think you should be able to use other tools to create a viable plan of certain areas: range finder, compass, high elevation with landmark features to plot for example. It's the kind of thing that I think would help to encourage co-operation and a good reason to try and organise trades/exhange. Asking people for directions to a certain location where they could share their map on your screen perhaps, and once you part ways it's removed. If you don't have the equipment or knowledge to create your own do you want to offer something in exchange for their time and effort that this object represents? It adds value to an otherwise common object. Want to steal it? It's going to get ripped unless you decided the quickest action was to shoot them, maybe you don't have a gun and thought that you'd cut and run. Of course that option is completely undermined by the proliferation of online maps - but it's the kind of thing that would really change the game in fundamental ways I think if that were not the case. Maybe even create a fake/misleading map that you could leave in a house, another way of competing with players that does not involve you killing them. * I also like translating the Russian signs into English to understand where I am. I personally think that an Russian glyph to English/[your native language here] phonetic guide would be fantastic in-game, at the moment I use a online site and that does irk me for reasons already stated. I do think it is in fact Novy Sobor from reading the forums but that's what I took from my translation. Edit: You have my beans though, I thought it was a good constructive suggestion, even though I wouldn't necessarily subscribe to it. And grammar. Like you said, you wouldn't use it. Then you don't have to use it. People that want to use it can use it. Just a matter of finding a pen and a piece of paper. And as for the map itself, it could become more unclear after a time, so that a 3 week old character needs to walk that route again to keep it up to date.I also like your idea of sharing the map with another player, that would be interesting indeed. As for the grammar, I'm Dutch :-)
teufel937 49 Posted January 6, 2014 I say no, and I am pretty sure if you have a pen and map in your inventory you can write on the map to check places off you have been, or mark down key locations

I mean you start with an empty paper, and as you go through the map it will begin to sketch the map, only within a let's say 50m around your player.
teufel937 49 Posted January 6, 2014 Eh still don't like the idea of it, you have maps you can find in game, and then all you need to do next is terrain association and landmark assoication, before you know it you won't need one... I can usually find my way to the NWAF without a map, and I thought it was because when I had a map and pen in my inventory I thought I seen the option when clicking on the map, or something of that nature to be able to make markers. But for some players (me included) it would be nice I think to get your map full. See it as a sort of objective. Just like getting the best gear. Something to work for. :-) Thanks for your opinion though! Didn't know about the option to place markers. I'll try it out later.
