Steely_D89 0 Posted January 6, 2014 Hey guys, I've been playing for a while now and typically haven't had problems finding my way around using maps online. However, this is the first time I've made it North and this time I don't have a compass... I made it near Devils castle again and headed West and somehow missed the airfield. After that I wandered around awhile until I was so far North/West that there was nothing. Then I headed down and found a railway. I followed it North/East and found a train yard that had a station area and a parking lot. Now, I thought that the dotted lines I was looking at on my map were railways but it turns out after about 45 minutes of walking they're actually "dirt roads" haha. According to the maps I keep finding of Chernarus they don't show ANY rails up North anywhere and they don't show ANY rail yards either. Am I literally off the current established map or are these maps just outdated? The rails are heading East mostly now and I guess I'm just going to keep following them. I've been using the map on the wiki as well as the map on dayzHQ. Any tips on a better map and any tips on just where the hell am I?

Casey Jones 3 Posted January 6, 2014 Welcome to my world. Train station is just north of Gvodzno.
floj 393 Posted January 6, 2014 lol exactly how I ended up the other day...and no idea where that railway was. I hit the railway from the other end though, so I just stayed going west til I hit the Lopatino road. If you're going East you should see the contours of the hill with Devil's castle quite easily once you get that far.

mySoup117 9 Posted January 6, 2014 I suggest you to read carefully and observe carefully, especially to the greens/deep greens/light greens, you will find the difference between open ground and woods and concentrated woods. Try to match the shape of the woods v. open on the map and since you have been wandering for a long time, be creative, you might be at South already (this happened to my friend once). P.S. never estimate how far (in length) have you walked/jogged/sprinted, always use landmarks.
Steely_D89 0 Posted January 6, 2014 (edited) @Applejaxc Huh? What cheating do you speak of? As I said, I'm using the map on the wiki as well as from DayZHQ. @MySoup117 On my trek up here I was good with going town to town and finding my direction via the sun. At night I've been using the North Star. Unfortunately this railway is in the midst of a forest/hilly range and I haven't even seen any buildings for the last while... @CaseyJones I'd be SUPER surprised if I was that far East... I only ended up at the train station 20-30 minutes ago and that's after I'd been heading West for a long time from Devils Castle the other day. I'll let you guys know where I was once I find something of note to find myself haha. Edited January 6, 2014 by Steely_D89

Casey Jones 3 Posted January 6, 2014 I'm 95% sure that's where you are because that's where my area of operation is, and I know that part of the map really well.
Steely_D89 0 Posted January 6, 2014 Well Casey and Soupy you were correct. It must have been up there. I poked my head out of the trees and came across what I believe to be Guba. I guess I can head to the NEAF anyway. Wanted to make it to NWAF one day but that will have to wait haha.

Better quality map than the two I was using... This one is literally 10% bigger than those two... On the wiki map and the other I had used you can't even see anything further north than Krasnostav and Petrovka really.

Just whilst trying to find one of the railways last night I ruined a potential surprise that I might have stumbled on myself one day :( Usually I only use out of game maps to check roughly where a town is for meeting someone else/getting my bearings

Just whilst trying to find one of the railways last night I ruined a potential surprise that I might have stumbled on myself one day :( Usually I only use out of game maps to check roughly where a town is for meeting someone else/getting my bearingsI've seen a lot of players saying that they refuse to use maps online for those reasons and others. I personally think that when you enter an area/town it should let you know where you are. In my mind this "story" involves a character from the area that would at least know the main towns etc... Unless I just washed up on shore from a very far ways away and have no idea where the heck I am. Haven't seen too much on the "origins" of this game besides being told it's us that writes it haha. In my mind external maps are fair game.
