CrocoDan 19 Posted January 6, 2014 Can someone clarify these terms I've been hearing in the forums: Public/Private Servers (when I look at the server list, which ones are private and which are public? and whats the difference?) Hives/Subhives/sub-private hives (have no idea what these are?)
Erik (DayZ) 61 Posted January 6, 2014 Public servers are the servers that are on the main Dayz Hive. You can play your character on any regular dayz server. On private servers your character is limited to this hive. Which normaly is just one server or a couple from the same community group. As far as I know there are no private servers yet but they are working on it. Correct me if I'm wrong. applejaxc 2500 Posted January 6, 2014 Public servers are ones intended for everyone to join. Private servers are run by people (rather than by the DayZ staff), are sometimes passworded, and often have a "Private Hive" (where what you do on that server does NOT carry over to other servers; you cannot get an M4 on a private hive and then play on another server, because you will no longer have that M4; the M4 is only usable on the private hive) Hives are the databases that keep track of where you are, what you have, and what your status is (hungry, thirsty, health, etc). The Public Hive is the official, DayZ Staff-run hive across all public servers where your gear/character can cross over from server-to-server. "Sub hives" are small branches unto the main hive that will eventually become their own, seperate entities.
wanji 6 Posted January 6, 2014 To make it a bit more explicit:Public servers let you create 1 character which you can play across all these servers, it's the official hive.On private servers you create a character that can only be played on that server. Sometimes clans etc have a group of these private servers which allow you to play that same character on those few servers, but not on the public hive servers. tansien 15 Posted January 6, 2014 It's basically like the different realms of World of Warcraft. The "public" hive is one realm, while the "private" ones are different realms. You have different characters on the different realms/hives.
The Aquatic Land Walrus 565 Posted January 6, 2014 (edited) Public servers: Servers that share a singular database. IE your character is saved across EVERY public server Private servers: The opposite of Public servers. They are privately owned, usually by a hosting company such as Vilayer. They only store the data of that server. Usually they are more unique than your generic public server, as they can have mods, or even be Friendly only. Hives: The database in which your character is stored. See Public hives/private servers. Generally, private servers are referred to as "Private hives" Sub-hives: I don't know much about these, but I am fairly sure that they are a community of public hives that can only store the data of that community. Quite similar to a hive of bees, so that might be why it gets the name. Sub-private hives: Same as Sub-hives, but it's a community of privately owned hives. This has got to be the most intelligent post I've made in a week. Edited January 6, 2014 by The Aquatic Land Walrus
