how do i add friends to the server query so i can join them

as stated not sure how to add friends so I can see what servers they are playing on.

I just click the friends tab at the top of the server screen. It will only list servers with your friends (Steam) on them. Then you can look at the details at the bottom to see which friend is actually on that server.
