I think it would be burly if you could do various things with the shovel. 

 

Hide corpse might be faster, or not work at all without a shovel.

 

Making gypsy wells for less risky water.

 

And digging small caches, like a small mound you can hide a few items in that stay in the world. (the items would however lose a level of quality every day or so, and when every item has been destroyed it is removed from the server)
