Good places to settle down?

Recommended Posts

So, planning ahead for when bases or some form of storage are implemented, I've been spending my DayZ time trawling the map for good areas to settle down in... There's not much else to do after end game other than survivor hunting and bandit hunting... I'm not good enough for either yet.

What do I mean by that? I want somewhere that once the aforementioned stuff is implemented, I can actually use as a base of operations.

I have a couple of ideas in mind already, but was wondering if anyone else had any ideas on it.

The criteria I would consider to make a good place to settle down would be as follows;

Dense woodlands, preferably with a lot of bushes to hide tents or whatever form storage and bases take in.

Decent loot-spawn areas nearby. Preferably a camo base within reasonable walking distance (half an hour tops) and areas to get food regularly and steadily. Obviously the latter dies down a little once hunting is implemented.

A water pump should be close by. I'm talking no more than ten minutes away.

Low player density. You don't want to be setting up in areas that have players frequently running through.

So, without being too in-depth and ruining your own bases, what do people consider the best areas to settle down in?

So far, I've been thinking islands, the deep south west after the new spawns and areas like Khelm, which are near everything, but pretty useless in themselves... Though maybe Kehlm isn't a good idea with the new spawns.

If the mod has taught me anything, it is that no matter how good your hiding place is it will be found, usually within a week of when you first set it up. Chernarus is big but not big enough to have a long term base.

That may be less of an issue now that waypoints aren't a thing any more. Before, you would have players setting a waypoint and blindly walking in a straight line to it, no matter what terrain it took them through. That's how my base was found most of the time. Now players are forced to actually use landmarks to navigate, and most of the people I've encountered have been on or near roads. Still, there are no locations that are entirely safe.

I think I'll have to wait until after the north is finished. I had a fantastic spot on the mod, that as far as I know, was never discovered, and it was not in the debug area. That spot is now gone with some of the map changes. Traffic patterns won't be established until the map is complete, and as we've seen up north there are many areas that look like future towns.

Thing is I've played the mod so much that I know my way round the map very very well and I'm not the only person that does. I've never used way points, I just used to patrol remote places on foot and constantly look around, tents and vehicles used to stick out against the trees and rocks so easily then there's the searching from the air in a chopper. Everything is so easy to spot from the air. The best places to hide stuff in the end would be by glitching tents into rocks, under water or in plain sight such as next too a house in a town. Until underground stashes got added it was impossible to hide stuff.

Yep, I'm the same. I'm usually the navigator of our group because I played the mod since its release, and played a lot of Arma 2 before that. Anyway, since I don't actually plan on doing this, another idea along the hiding tents in plain sight line is to put it with those storage tents (well, the ones with the same model as the storage tents in the mod) that are in the military tent areas. Assuming they actually use that model when they eventually add storage, that is.

I played on a 40 man server that was usually full and found three places that I placed tents that were never disturbed and none of those was north of Krasnostav. The biggest thing I found was plan small and think about how a player will get from one area to another. While there might be a player checking grid by grid behind every rock and tree most people won't. Most players have a destination in mind and are not likely to take certain routes to get there. One of those three spots is no longer an option because they added some new buildings to the map right where a small clump of trees used to be. It took a while to set that tent and I lost a few doing it but once set there was zero ability to see it unless you were trying to pass through a small area that a player couldn't possibly get through.

At this point, though, server hopping might actually extend your base's life. Since most people seem to want to jump from Balota to Balota or from NWAF to NWAF they are spending even less time out in the map exploring. There aren't any helicopters either so that will greatly cut down on how much ground a person can cover looking for bases. Hopefully they never add helis as they end up only being used to find camps to raid. Having all buildings being able to be enterable might allow you to even set up a base in a house in some out of the way village that has little chance to be messed with. Lots of cool possibilities depending on what type of base building/storage options they add.

All good points, I think.

The only thing is, I'm fairly sure that the tents appearing in choppers, etc will be fixed now. I never played the mod, so I'm not entirely sure what the problems are, but from the sounds of it, it seemed to be as simple as the draw distance... I'm sure that's easily fixable now. Unless every single tree were visible from the height of a chopper, the only fair way would be to just make them invisible on the z axis as soon as you're above the treeline.

Anyway, we'll see how it goes. The point of people just running in straight lines/through remote areas doesn't necessarily make much of a difference if you place the tent on a side where there's nothing behind it, if you catch my drift - that'd leave it with people only finding it if they were actively looking for it. I guess we'll have to wait and see, but I'm looking forward to it.

In the mod, if it was within the draw distance you could easily see it as they stand out like a sore thumb sitting next to dark trees. No matter which way you placed them there were very few places you could put one where they weren't easily spotted from the air at some angle. That's all most people used helicopters for in the mod. Find a chopper or repair one, use it to find any other aircraft on the server then once you have a monopoly on fast transport use them to hunt down and rob other peoples' camps. The only thing I can see them doing to help, (if they add helis), would be to put in some camo netting of some kind that blends in perfectly with the ground. Even without helis that kind of netting would be awesome.
