The (far) future of DayZ

Recommended Posts

Okay, this is not for the next hotfix :D

First turn Dayz into an MMO so we are all playing in the same world (instead of 50 per server on different copies of the world)

Second do a deal with google for all their survey data and streetview data. Create a map of the world in the same way that the chernarus map was created from Czech republic survey data.. get google locations so you know where everyone is...

Third, have everyone spawn where they currently are, so outside their own house on their own street in a global zombie apocalypse.... GAME ON.....

With locations, it can make holidays fun. Imagine spawning outside a hotel in some far flung place and then trying to get back to your friends... i need a helicopter...

Fourth, write me a big cheque for the idea....

:P

the amount of people who play this game (I hate to say it) will never be enough to populate a full scale world, it would make the chance of meeting another survivor that is not your friend incredibly slim.

on the flip side capital cities would be spawning deathtraps only those who got in early to get gear would survive anyone new or had died would be screwed.

tl;dr:

sounds good in theory (even epic) but is not practical or possible.

Id love to see this happen but like you say, this would be in the far future. like 10 years atleast id say. The best servers available atm can only hold 50 men atm (i know some have more but they lag out and crash as a result). The reason being is the sheer amount of resources dayz uses. Also the more things that are added, the more resources are used. Here's hoping bill gates picks up dayz and likes it :)

Perhaps a map of London as rocket got his inspiration for DayZ from 28 days later, would be doable in the neer future?

oh that reminds me he is planning on porting it to Arma3 which does have 900km maps(correct me if im wrong please) instead of 250km so the map size will almost quadruple in size.

With the growth of cloud computing, collocation servers and distributed file shares and databases it shouldn’t be too difficult. And you don’t need build the whole world to start.

Also changing the server architecture so servers run “users” instead of running the “entire world of chernarus” which can only handle 50 users. as they all tie into a main dayz database anyway.. then each server can run a no. of users and the bit of the world they are currently in, no need for the whole world data.. database replication for the rest can be done slower and in the background. So the central dayz database is always up to date.

You could test this now using just chernarus.. but it will take a complete arma 2 rewrite.. as the servers want to run the whole world, not bits of it.

So servers should focus on users and a distributed world, with central database (which can be distributed too).. rather than lots of copies of the “whole” world which can only carry low numbers of users.

so each server would still only carry 50 users, but the world we are playing in would be the same... would get rid of people disconnecting and moving servers to avoid death or loot logging, ie jumping servers in a good loot locations to endlesly get new loot..

Like I said far future, and lots of money involved to go from client/server based to MMO... but not impossible...

Well, i come with correction :) - 900km2 is the overall area, however its mostly (2/3) consisted of water surface, therefore the land area is going to be rougly 300 km2...

[side note]

Have you seen or played http://www.class3outbreak.com/ ?

It is a very cool zombie game that feature google maps. You can set up an outbreak on your city block.

Sorry that what I said has nothing to do with Dayz.
