Playing in the Dark: How?

Recommended Posts

So I have a question:

First the scenario:   I logged out at the NWAF  last night in a pretty secure area near the NW tents.  Today I login, its pitch black I cant see my gun infront of me, or my feet when I look down.  So, I cheep out and turn gamma / brightness up. It helps SOME but still dark, and my screen view looks like a 90's video game.  I move to one of the tents, which I cant see ANYTHING anymore.  About 30 secs later a guy runs right up to me and shoots me, I cant see his flash, only hear him shooting, of course i die.  Yet oddly enough as im in the "dead" screen i still hear him/her shooting.

So now my question, how the hell do ppl see so well in the dark.  I couldnt see ANYTHING is was so dark around me, yet this person knew right where I was.  Obviously some players play at night time, but honestly how?  I try and even cheeping out the visibility is only poor-fair. I prefer to have a semi fighting chance at night.

Thanks Ceno

Some people like me use the moon light, but sometimes the moon isn't out. I'm assuming the moon wasn't out when you were playing.

If you were using your flashlight, there is currently a bug where flashlights can be seen through buildings & structures.  Also, he might have heard you and also he was probably camping from a position where he had a good vantage and might have been able to see your silhouette.  Or he might (but probably not) have been a hacker.  Although, they usually hang out at Balota.

Do you want to play at night? Would you prefer to play during the day? Or, are you just curious how people do it. Personally I think the night time is still a bit unrealistic compared to my RL night vision. Honestly, unless the moon is full, I don't much like it. I have a tutorial video that shows how to get on a 24/7 daytime server if that is what you want. Here's the link to the video if you feel like your always stuck on a night time server due to when you typically play.

If your intention is to actually play at night, then disregard the video linked below...

Yeah Im not sure. I doubt hacker, though odd he knew right want tent i went to. So maybe he heard me or the moonlite hit me just right.  I dont use flashlights, so i know it wasnt that.  Just annoying i couldnt see myself, but someone could see me :/   Guess ill have to get better.

kinda don't like the current night cycle. I wish it was faster to maybe 4 hours day 4 hours night... but seeing at night if there is no moon out then seeing is pretty hard. I know if he had a certain scope(maybe acog not sure) if he aims at you the aimer moving along your characters skin a bit

Whenever I am farming the NWAF tents, I tend to low-crawl most of the time: less sound that crouch-walking. If I'm really paranoid I will roll, using the default 'Q' & 'E" keys, as it makes no sound at all. I've crawled out of a tent with a zombie right in front of me and they didn't move: so the night can be a boon or a bane.

But in regards to your scenario, and as others have suggested, they may have just heard and seen your silhouette. You know which tents people tend to favor and you can camp at the end of the 'lane' and fire indiscriminately. As you said, you could hear them firing in the death screen which implies that they were firing in a direction as they did not know whether they hit you or not.

Do what everyone else does on night servers. Brightness and gamma all the way up and turn clouds OFF. It will look like day time except be black and white because of the night shaders. There's a thread about this in general discussion called night exploit. I put screenshots of what it looks like in it. I like the idea of nighttime, but as the game stands it serves no purpose as is.

If they address the gamma/brightness issue, It might become an actual experience of "night".

As of now, turning on a flashlight is pointless unless you're trying to attract player aggro. Pretty much just a trap that new players fall into.

Now its pretty much like everyone has animal-like nightvision. Although I generally don't care what time of day the server is on when I play, I'm always on night servers since they usually have less people and more loot. (Even if a city or military base has all its doors opened, if its a night server chances are they missed alot more than they would have in a day server)
