Question about server stability

This my first post here but I fucking love this game so far. I'm still learning the ropes and have thankfully stayed away from my fellow survivors. I haven't played an alpha before but I'm genuinely impressed with this. My question is about something that's been happening in the past few hours. I've had a lot of lag and general unresponsiveness when it was very smooth earlier today. Is this a pretty common occurence? It mostly happened if I panned over stuff pretty fast so I assumed there was a problem loading all that stuff at once. If it isn't too common I'll check out what might cause it on this side.

 

And because I'm morbidly curious, are there places players usually end up? I seem to be on the coast in the same two towns a lot. Only a few zombies around. I've found a player corpse once (think they fell off a ladder in a lighthouse and the fall did it) but that's it. I know I'll most likely be shot if they every see me but I'm too curious for my own good.

You might be playing on a server that has had a long uptime without restart, thus leading to small amounts of lag.  Try server hopping to see if performance improves.

All players spawn on the coast in one form or another, depending on the server population you will find players in the major cities looting.  If you travel further inland you will come across players at major hit points for looting specialty items i.e. airfields/military encampments.
