Here's a little trick I've picked up on using a compass while in 3rd person.

Its an good little tip ...but id rather just switch to first person then look at my compass then switch back to 3rd ...would take like 2 seconds :)

Actually really useful if its night and you can't see your compass normally.

Yeah... Its still a useful tip in 1st person as well. Sometimes it's hard to see the compass when it's badly damaged even while in first person.
