What's the radius for Direct Channel?

Hey all,

This is my first post, but I've been in the game for about 2-3 weeks now. But for the first time I am playing with a friend. Unfortunatly I can't seem to find my mic, so we are using Steam chat. But I can't continue Alt+Tabbing every thirty seconds in a game like this.

So I want to use the direct channel, but since 80% of the community would hunt us down for our beans, I am afraid to use it without knowing the actual distance it can be heard.

So that's the question. How far off can Direct communication be heard?
