Nope...no food or water to start.

I hope that they stay with no backpack on start as well.

Heck, they can loose the flashlight and make that loot too.

 

All you should start with is the shirt on your back. Now, start survivin.

Flashlight is loot as well... I think losting the flashlight wouldn't hurt but not all servers are daylight if you played on a only daylight cycle server then that would be ok... In the future it will be upto the server admin what you may or may not get. Remember this is to help them test. The game isn't ready for you to rule the world.~[GSN] Pager

I was killed thursday at vybor with a whole shedload of gear. I didnt hop on the forums about how difficult it would be to 'explore' without water and the lack of loot in coastal cities. Instead i respawned and ran directly off the coast north, got some sips from a well in bor (i think) and was in Rogovo before i bothered to stop and pick up my first items.

 

There is nothing wrong with the current starting loot. If you move with purpose instead of aimlessly wandering from building to building on the coast (on that 40/40 server thats been up for hours) then you can get yourself to a safe place where theres food and drink aplenty. 

 

The idea is that you're a survivor. not a well prepared hiker out for an afternoon stroll. alpha or not, its not difficult to get up north, honest :P

Do players not understand that this game is intended to be very hard? You will die from starvation, thirst, sickness, zombie noms, players. You will die regularly. Also I haven't had a need for water containers in a while, just drinking from fountains, rivers, ponds atm. I know this will be a super bad idea once the sickness mechanic gets expanded though :P

Have you ever tested any other games? A lot of MMO's will do things like start everyone at level 30 because it helps them test later content instead of constantly having people re-test the same early content at the start of each phase of testing. Other games I've tested had phases where you only tested boss fights with fully geared characters, or FPS games where you only had access to certain late levels of the game etc. This is pretty standard practice because, again, you get more actual testing of ALL content instead of an over-abundance of testing of the "early" content with only a small percentage of players properly testing the rest of it.

 

So, what the OP is saying actually makes sense. Just because a bunch of you guys want the game to be "hardcore" doesn't mean that, from a testing standpoint, doing this temporarily wouldn't be useful.

 

Your reasoning against this is actually a selfish one: You want to play the game, not test it. That's ok, but don't pretend it has anything to do with "mucking up data."

 

Personally, I think it's a bit early to do this but the idea itself is not flawed in any way. But there are more important, critical problems to be addressed before we get to this point.

There is no end game bosses or higher lvl zones or monsters in dayz. There is no reason to have us start with better gear to be tested. So yes his idea is flawed.
