What do you think of this build?

Recommended Posts

So I've been looking through websites for new pc components, mostly GPU, CPU, an SSD memory and motherboard. Rest of my components should be fine, as I have 650 W power source and 1000gb hard drive.

What I've found to be the best for my budget is this:

Intel i5 4670K processor  - 190€

Sapphire Radeon R9 280X 3gb ddr5 graphics card  -  286€

MSI Z87-G41 motherboard   -  95€

Kingston SSDNow V300 basic 120gb   -    78€

Total of 650€

+ I also need new headset, anyone got experience about steelseries siberia v2? Could get them for 70€.

Would like to hear your opinions :) Thanks!

I'll keep it short. You tend to slightly overpay by buying the newer gen parts as with all things and the newer gen parts will last for many years to come; however, the previous gen parts will have roughly the same longevity. Also, with the headset, many people seem to do fine with it but most of my friends who get that brand end up having retarded white noise or other issues. There are better headsets for the same price. I personally would NEVER get a steel series. (It also looks dumb).

P.S. are these prices x-mas sale prices?

Yeah, well I was reading some reviews about siberian v2 headset and it got very good rating in almost every place I checked. Gotta think about that though. Nothing wrong with the looks in my opinion.

Do you think it would be wise to buy some older parts of the same price or just go with these newer ones? I have no idea which way would be more cost/performance effective.

And that GPU had -17% xmas price, but I think rest of the parts had no discounts.

Way to expensive for what you get. As with Razer, you basically pay for the brand, not the wuality. Not saying SteelSeries doesn't have goo quality products, but you can get a equally functional product for much less.

May i suggest Sharkoon headsets? I had the rhs 200, really cheap (at least in my country) and the sound quality is amazing for that price. My friend has the v2, nothing too special in my opinion

I tried to search for Sharkoon rhs 200, none of the most popular online shops didnt have them.. Then I tried other Sharkoon products, but didnt find them either :/ Dont know if it's that they dont sell them in my country... Amazon didnt have them either.

Any other suggestions?

Depends on your price range for a headset. Tomshardware has reviews on headsets of various price ranges. I suggest you check it out.

With the whole price vs. performance issue, it all depends on what you plan on doing with this computer. Is it purely for gaming or is it for slightly more intensive things such as streaming/recording (also keep in mind of your net speeds and if you have bandwidth usage limits) or graphics design? If it's only for gaming and casual streaming/recording, I would recommend getting last gens parts at a cheaper price. My friend has a computer that's two years old and works great still as the parts that come out newly are extremely overspeced for what is necessary unless you plan to stream, record, photoshop and game all at the same time :D.

Well, its mostly for gaming. All kinds of fps and mmo games (DayZ is the priority number one, of course =D)

And thanks for the tips!:)

Should be perfect for DayZ. Never go with an AMD cpu for Bohemia games.

Nice to hear, thanks! :>

:D. Just remember some older gen parts are practically the same as the newer gen ones even in regards to price such as the i5-4670k being basically the same as the i5-3570k so it's fine to get the 4670k. Prices in motherboards from a z87 (4th gen processors) and a z77 (3rd gen) may arise but shouldn't be that different. Only real difference in my opinion would be the gpu. Look at some benchmark testings/reviews to see price vs. performance. Most benchmark tests use battlefield 4 and such as standards to test fps. Most games aren't going to be as gpu intensive as battlefield. GPUs from 2 years ago can still get over 60 fps on mmos and other fps.

Hold on....

Where is your PSU, DVD and HDD??

I don't really think you need a dvd drive. Either install O/S through USB or just use the disk drive of an older computer. Who uses disks these days other than for O/S installation?

He may just have an old HDD from a previous computer. If not, i'd say just wait until a sale comes around because 120 gb can last quite awhile unless he hoards movies or downloads every game he doesn't play anymore.

I have a somewhat similar build that I put together recently.  SSD as my drive for the OS/games(Then two old 500gb HDD for other shit)Same video card, except I have the i5-3350p.  Every game I've thrown at it including Arma 3 runs great.  Dayz still runs mediocre but that's because of the shitty engine, for the price that's a good build. Just get 2x4GB of G.skill ram or something and you should be fine.

The build is fine, as for the headsets. Get them I love them, they're so comfortable, 3D sound is spot on, and the mic quality is pretty good.

So this is from personal experience. But I was always told to not mix parts. What I mean by that is running an intel processor and an AMD graphics card. Like I said, from what I have been told, there is actual performance differences when running a consistent brand in your system. Just from how they are optimized and such.

Regarding the actual parts. I don't know squat about Intel lol.. My whole build is AMD.

- The R9.. meh.. its the newest and greatest.. so what! Like one of the previous commenters said, go with a previous gen card. The HD 7870 are a great bang for a buck (Go with a 7970 to get that extra V-RAM). Its what I run in my system. I'm running on Very High with little to no lag or issues. Arma/DayZ:SA is just about the only game that I occasionally get hiccups on high settings.

- What RAM are you using?

- You really don't NEED a CD drive.. I don't use one in my system seeing how practically everything is available through some form of file sharing now.

And dont be set on one source, I gernerally shop all form NewEgg, but you can sometimes get stuff cheaper through Amazon or something.

Thanks for the answers! :)

I kind of forgot to mention that I've got the rest of the parts (HDD, Power supply unit, DVD drive)  in my current pc. They are like 4 years old, but I guess those should be fine still? 650W psu, 1000gb hdd and just a regular DVD drive.

A friend of mine has almost similar build (he has same processor, motherboard, and his gpu is some of the radeon 79xx series, cant remember the exact one) and he has had no problems yet, and is really satisfied with it.

EDIT: And yeah forgot to tell that I have 12 gb of DDR3 memory, is it still viable for this new build?

Absolutely! When I first built mine I was using a roughly 5 year old 750W PSU and the thing ran like a champ! Seems like an odd amount to me for the ram? How, many sticks do you have? And just be sure you will be utilizing dual channel with them.

HDD can be switched out later if you chose to. At this point I would just worry about getting the core components. Just make sure you leave yourself with some head room on the PSU.. Which with 650W you should be totally fine. Use this as a reference. It gives a good idea. Just because it says your system only uses 400W (example) give yourself some headroom in the case you decide to add that extra RAM or put in an SSD. You dont wanna blow money on a PSU or and end up not having enough power.

Yeah, I ran it and it said I would need 588W with the new set.

And my amount of ram is actually weird, I've got 2x 2gb sticks and 2x 4gb sticks. I'm not even sure if they benefit from each other, or should all of them be of the same kind... Is it fine to run it as I have it now?

thanks!

I've got a new question also..

As Im getting an SSD where I will have to move the OS, do I need to empty this existing HDD I got, or are they usable if I leave them to my old HDD and just get the OS to the SSD? (+Some of the most important programs/games)

And if I have to clear my HDD, is there any good backup program and/or a program that I would be able to clean my HDD easily.. It's got over 500gb of data, but I would say that 400gb of them are useless for me.  A lot of games and shit that I've downloaded during the time I've had this computer.

Thanks in advance :)

I find this build quite enjoyable. However, it's extremely susceptible to lag.

I've -almost- died twice due to lag today. First time was to a guy who went fisticuffs on me... while I was carrying a rifle AND an axe and could switch to neither while my enemy was first seemlingly and stupidly strafing in a straight direction and then teleporting right next to me, punching me ten times in just a fraction of a second.

Second was a zombie, same procedure.

Then there are the items that I want to rearrange or pick up, the weapons I want to switch or doors  I want to operate... which all can take up to a minute until everything takes effect...

Hmmm, never encountered something like that..  When you build the system make sure to refer to your manual for the MOBO.. there are certain slots you have to put the RAM in.. since your using four sticks, most likely you will fill all of your slots.. but for instance... the two sticks of 4gb will NOT go right next to each other.. Sometimes the channels are actually color coded... May not make sense now.. but you will see... To be safe.. I would put the 4gb sticks in the primary slots! :)

So in regards to this. From my understanding of what you are saying. You currently have an HDD with the OS and your programs and games and such. You want to move JUST the OS to the SSD and keep the games and such on the HDD?

- If this is the case. Your best bet is to just move the whole darn thing to the SSD and then move the games and such back to the HDD after you have cleaned it.

- Only do this if you feel comfortable working with computers. But here is a pretty clear guide to transferring to an SSD from an HDD.

http://apcmag.com/how-to-transfer-your-os-to-your-new-ssd-drive.htm

- Cleaning the HDD... So this is pretty straight forward. You simply have to format the drive. This will COMPLETELY erase EVERYTHING on it. So make sure you have those essential files of yours over in a temporary folder on your newly installed SSD or on a thumb stick.

Yes I will make sure they'll be in the right slot when I'm changing the parts (Ordered them today, gonna take like 1 week or more I guess), with a help of someone who has done it before so I don't fuck it up :D

That's exactly what I meant! And I guess I'm going to delete like every program and game and take only the most important files to the SSD. Then I just install the OS from the SSD and move the files to my HDD back, right?

Thank you a lot, appreciate your help :)

Right. So. Just to be clear on the exact steps I would take.

1.) Use the guide I provided. "Transfer" your whole HDD to the SSD...... - OS, programs, games and all. (You will essentially have an exact copy of the HDD on the SSD.)

2.) Boot up using the SSD only. Make sure EVERYTHING is working as it should. After this is done. It is safe to plug in your old HHD and reformat. Make that baby new.

3.) Once that is complete. Its time to drag and drop all those programs, games, and files that you want into your newly cleaned HHD!

KEY NOTE: After step 1.   Make sure to plug in the SSD after the transfer is done. This should be the ONLY drive you have plugged into your PC.. Like I said, make sure everything boots up and functions as it should. You don't want to reformat that HDD and end up losing your whole OS and everything else because the transfer didn't go right.

I'm trying to be as clear as possible as I don't want to see something bad happen to your PC and then you come flame to me lol..

Lemme know if you have any questions of the above steps or ANYTHING else PC related. :)

I LOVE this kind of stuff. I've got three builds coming up this January for some friends who have some money from tax checks lol.. I'm practically drooling just thinking about getting to mess with some new parts and build some nice systems for them!

//edit Come back and let me know how it goes to! Im currently running two HDDs in my computer right now and have been wanting to move my OS and programs to an SSD as well. Just been looking for the right price.

Dont listen to guys who say dont buy the R9280 its the same card as a 7xxx all they did was OC and stablize the 280 and its almost same price they set a new fan on stupid stuff there is noting new about it.

The hawaii chip amd did is only on the 290 and 290x.

There is also the nvidia 770 who is around the same area of performance and should be around price aswell.

Cpu: U choosen a fine cpu all i want to say to u is even intel is in front with cpu u have to think about what am i goin to use this for if its only for PC-gaming and normal papir work u can also look at AMD they do fine cpu's aswell and perform the same in games.

If u goin to render video's photoshop 3d-modeling intel is the way to go.

And the fx fx-8350 socket am3+ is a fine one.

remember atleast 8 gb of memory for a gaming pc. U havent said how much memory u wanted to buy :)

Motherboard is fine noting to say about it.

Everything u have choosen is fine :)

Hope ur enjoy ur setup, i just wanted to show there is other possibilities.
