How do you open cans, when right click it just says "recieving"

Topic title. I don't know if it's a bug or I'm doing something wrong. I have a hatchet I can open cans with. I have canned sardines and beans which I would like to eat but when right clicking all it says is "recieving." Looks like I'm going to starve to death if it's an unresolved bug or some sort :P

You need to drag a can opener or another sharp object over it.  If an orange box appears behind it, that means you can open it.

go into inventory and drag and drop a "can opener" or "screwdriver or "knife" over the can you want to open... maybe some other things will open it too

I have had to have the can opener or whatever I am using to open the can in my hand for it to work as well...
