Opinion on the Standalone from a DayZ newcomer but longtime lurker (youtube/here)

Recommended Posts

Well seeing as I bought into this Alpha I feel it is at least useful to anyone reading to get the opinion of one small insignificant player - who had never played the mod itself but has watched various footage of it online. I should say that I really enjoy what I have played so far... and that the game to me is exactly what I expected with the current state it is in and that is a very rough and feature stripped starting point to build on and make it something great with the amazing potential it has.

I would like to basically voice my personal dislikes so far which I am sure are subject to change over time and I am most looking forward to. Praise is good, but well voiced critique is just as useful at this early stage in development. And I do enjoy discussing negatives!

I) I think a forum poster here described it best that your character effectively has to eat like a 'bodybuilder loaded on creatine' I find that so much focus is put onto food and water that it is literally dominating my mindset when playing. Food is key when it comes to survival but I can last a few days without water and food so realism is not a point for the constant urge of nutrition and water here in the game. It just seems way too overboard... I like challenge and do not want the game dumbed down in any form, but to me the survival aspect should be coming from the infected, disease, traps, kill on sight bandits and maybe the weather. The way things are now it makes everyone have to move around for loot like locusts and does not offer any variation. I would quite like to have the ability to stick around a general area and survive, other times run a lap around the whole map like I did earlier today- choice. Basically summarized the constant need for liquid and food to me seems a little excessive and deters me from playing a more relaxed time consuming play style as I and surely many others would like in Chernarus.

II) Zombies/Infected are an annoyance at this stage. They have the ability to follow you like magnets and make looting towns a tad annoying at times when sighted. I know in two years time if this project is still going strong these enemies will be like night and day to how they are now but I do hope they are improved in general. More numerous and swarming you - whilst losing them more readily with hiding or running  out of their sight would be more intense than a single magnetized Zombie that can kill you quite easily when without a firearm would be great. Though that does not happen, as they are quite simple to evade at this time.

III) Higher server count! The best thing of this game so far to me is player interaction be it good (helped with food or medical supplies and yes even bad (Kill on sight charmers) But I really want more. I hope if its feasible we can have 150-200 player servers. Perhaps that is overkill but sometimes a complete meat grinder of players good and bad, hiding from them in the dark nights and gauging how safe it is to interact with them would be thoroughly entertaining.

IV) Slightly more refined system of relaying to me how my character is doing health wise! This goes without saying and of course will change in time.

And really that is all I have to say so far for negativity, call me easy to impress but I knew what I was buying in to. I like others simply wanted to get my hands on this game and for me get my feet wet in the rather harsh world of DayZ. Best of luck in future to developers and players.

Firstly, welcome!

I think the majority of your points most people would for sure agree with. I personally think 150-200 would be way too much but every player has a different mindset on how the game should be. My view is that around 60 players would be good. Trying to loot and survive with 150-200 players would be madness (which some people are into for sure). But with eventual private hives anything is possible!

Hey I think it is certainly all about having some variation and freedom of choice - it's such a vital thing in a game like this for sure.

I imagine all of these issues will be addressed.

I kinda hate to say it, because different mod updates have changed my opinions in the past, but the SA alpha zombies behavior is great IMO.

Sprint away from them by double-tapping "w". Run through buildings with multiple exits. Zig zag up hills so they have to walk.

Melee is a WAY better experience when outside. Zombies no longer zig zag around like UFOs and they don't magically sprint closer to you from a distance anymore when you are running.
