How do you use the map item?

I tried holding it in my hand, I tried binding Map to the M key, but it opens a blank black screen... I tried right clicking the map... I'm stumped...

Put the map into your hotbar and which ever number it is assigned to press that to pull up your ingame map i.e. 1,2,3,4.

You need to put it in your hotbar, and press which number it is.
