Day/Night based on time ingame?

I was playing for over 4 hours on the one server, it eventually goes to day time. My mate also on day time dcs and rejoins, it is pitch black night for him but full bright day for me.

 

Really? So I disconnected and reconnected and now I am in full night time. So something is wrong?
