Issues getting back into the game after not playing for months

I am having a few issues trying to play vanilla dayz. I am running dayz 1.8.0.3 with the arma patch 103718. I updated using dayz commander but tried launching manually as well.

 

The first is that I connect to a server, load up and get to gender selection, but the background is gray and I can't select male or female. Sometimes the male/female option doesn't even show up.

 

The second is where I can choose a gender, but 5-10 seconds after I get ingame running around, my character suddenly dies and I'm booted to the server menu. After that happens I can't click anything and have to alt tab and end arma.

 

Has anyone else had this issue and can lend a hand? I searched around the forums but couldn't find similar threads/issues.

that sounds server specific, i assume you have tried multiple servers and had the same result? 

 

and to clarify, when you say you character dies, do you mean you just get kicked or its actually killing you?

I have tried many servers, and I was actually able to get into only one server in the last week. This has happened on every other server.

 

I'm reinstalling arma 2 and dayz right now, but if that fails I am still curious if anyone has had these issues.

 

EDIT: I also tried installing epoch and got the same issues. I had no issues with dayz since I started playing in may '12 and now it suddenly wants to act up :(

I have a non steam version of arma 2, and I can't find how to verify the cache. If this reinstall doesn't work I'll see if I can find how to do that with a manual install.

After reinstalling arma 2, dayz and dayz commander I'm having no issues. I have no clue what the issue was, maybe having arma installed for over 2 years did it.
