I need to replace my hard drive will I lose my player? Or is he linked to steam?

How can I preserve my character?

nope, as long as you dont buy a new copy of arma 2 your character is maintained by the database, thus will not be lost.

Ill have to re download off steam does that make a difference???

Nope, steam will still use the same cd key/guid, the only thing that you will have to do is re configure your characters name/graphics settings etc. your actual character and gear wont be affected.

really you could get a cage and hook up your new HD to the PC then copy all the data and change drives, that way you wont need to redownload much, although the copy time could take awhile depending on the speed of you new/old drive
