chem lights and contrast

Recommended Posts

is it possible to make it so you can equip a chem light and stick it to your vest or somewhere outside your vision, so you don't have this blinding red/green/blue stick swinging around in front of you? they seam to stick to ceilings and walls just fine.

when i'm looking forwards, as useful as a chem light can be, the stick doesn't just get annoying, but imo it ruins the aesthetic as well.

looking over my shoulder/behind with a chem light's awesome - the subtle coloured illumination bleeding into the white/grey/black contrast of the background landscape and sky at night looks awesome... then i look forward again and the image is ruined.

i think the same should be true of the flash light as well. get it out of the field of vision and at arms length or something (unless you're crouching or prone). you could make it so when holding down alt to look around the flash light rotates with the head?

holding a flash light like a gun and using your whole body to aim it just seams odd to me.

yeah, exactly. people use these things to illuminate stuff, not to blind themselves - lol.

does the player avatar cast shadows? walking along with a flare at you side would result in massive shadows being cast to one side, right? that could be very cool. pressing alt to look around could make you hold the flare out in front of you.

Yeah, agreed. I'm not sure why this post didn't get more attention. It's already risky to carry a chemlight since it makes you so visible, so why punish the player more by making him hold the damn thing in front of his eyes? It kind of like making you hold a scoped rifle upside down and trying to hit a rabbit.

There's a misconception that chemlights make you visible.

Blue chemlights cannot be seen beyond 40m.

you can still see the actual stick for 100's of meters, though.

when i first started playing DayZ, i remember freak'n out in the pitch black after getting some good kit when i saw the stick of a blue chem-light coming towards me.

went prone, extinguished... everything, waited 10 minutes.

nothing...

thought to myself, he's doing what i'm doing. rolled across. chem light still there, moving ever-so-slightly.

thus began a game of cat and mouse involving myself, flares and warning shots across the bow of a discarded chem-light that looked like it was moving because, at that distance, it wasn't being anti-aliased properly.

That is paranoia coming for you with a vengeance there TwoToes.

When I use lumi-sticks or chemlights at work, a trick that we use is to completely cover one side of the stick with black bodge tape...think of ducting tape, but its black, military grade and make of kryptonite or something.

The results are that you can illuminate what you intend to, without making yourself blind.
