A question about item persistance

I was just wondering about the persistance of things like backpacks, if I drop a backpack on a server, does it stay there until the server restarts/Someone else finds it? I was having daydreams today at work about hiding stashes of loot in some places for easy storage.

Backpacks do not despawn like other items do.

Backpacks despawn after a server restart though. Afaik the only persistant storage possibility are tents, which stay in the game world for three days.
