SA Idea - Tutorial Mission

Recommended Posts

Ok, my idea is that we have a small tutorial mission at the beginning of the SA. It would be completely optional and would just cover some basics of looting. The idea is to stop the hours of teaching a new player the ropes. Many of my friends from l4d2 came over to Dayz and I lost count of the times iv had to start at the beginning.

Im thinking it could be set in Cherno and start you just outside the city. When your first waypoint comes up it pauses the player and a hint/mid screen text comes up explaining the waypoint. First waypoint takes you to the market. The first time you transition from grass to tarmac it pauses you and explains about the effect of running on different surfaces, stances, ect.

When you get to market it talks you trough what can be found there and makes you pick up some beans. Next takes you to firestation and makes you pick up a gun. Then a small crowd of zeds could appear, you all get paused and some info on zeds pops up. After that you can kill these few zombies, and when they are all dead this starts the normal spawning of zeds.

Last waypoint takes you to a tall building where you are picked up by a heli and flown out to sea. There could even be a natural transition strait into a random server after it to keep a "flow" going.

Oh and a waypoint in there somewhere to explain a lil about fixing a car. Carnt see this being too hard to make using standard arma 2 editor mechanics (well apart from how to trigger the full spawning of zeds) and could help new players feel like they know something going in.

No. Tutorials ruin yhe "holy shit whatthefuck do I do" feel.

We don't want players to know how things work. That's one of the things that makes DayZ such a gem.

You can still have that feeling....jus skip the tutorial. I would skip it myself aswell ;). But out of the friends I brought over from L4D about 4 have spent an hour or 2 on dayz and never come back. That because they said they didn't have the time to run round learning stuff....or couldn't be bothered.

Its sorta the casual gamer argument, for someone who just wants to come online and have some fun a tutorial could be great. Maybe even inspire them to continue playing. eg, "man I wanna find a car like on the tutorial"

I don't like this idea. I can see where you're coming from but no, it's not Day Z at all. Day Z isn't player friendly, in fact it doesn't even like you - it wants you to mess up!

Showing othEr players the ropes is kind of what it's all about - that or shotting htem int he back and stealing their beanz! Those of us who have become veterans of the game have done so the hard way through trial and error (shame on you if you haven't and just you-tube'd your way to glory!), through those helful "friendlies" we have encountered and thats why we love Day Z.

I'd give players no real user guide, no printable maps, no control guide, no details of content, no list of items or weapons etc - Day Z is about players exchange stories and experiences, not cuddly user friendly tutorials. Drop players right inhte thick of it and let them figure it out, withthe help of those who they meet in game.

Players exchanging info can also bring about some brilliant "legends" that matter of a fact things sucha s user guides and wikis kill!

There were rumours here and in game of, night vision goggles, "ghost ships", phantom radio broadcasts, random military patrols, super zombies, hidden secrets in the woods, murder NPCs and abotu a hundred other stories that turned out to be mostly untrue - but no one knew for certain and they brough about so many hours of entertainment for players! Players exchanging stories and information is fundemental to Day Z, anyhting that encourages should be embraced.

That's how it should be! Tutorials would have ruined many hours of excitement for me, in the same way snooping at my Christmas presents before chribo used to when I was a kid (and last christmas!).

nope, it takes away from the raw survival aspect of the game, figuring eveything out is what is fun about dayz.  Having to find out the hard way food is scarce and most players are dicks.
