FPS magnitude and it's correlation to infection "difficulties"

Recommended Posts

Learned recently that the amount of infected and other things that spawn in upon ones arrival to an area is in some way dependent upon the quality of computer running the game (I believe this is determined by what FPS the rig is achieving).

Yesterday I played with a buddy of mine on vanilla for the first time in ages (he prefers "more exciting" maps/mods). He has a far superior computer to mine and I immediately noticed that there were far more infected in the area (happene to be zelengorsk). I also noticed that my fps didn't seem to suffer as a result (side note).

The increase in infected didn't result in me catching an infection, but I must note that we both had m4 variants and a decent amount of ammo (enough to kill every inhabitant at zelengorsk. Much fun). Oh, and his hero he forgot about has "survived" for 184 days today. Cool.

To my point.

While I understand that this spawning "mechanic" was put in place to improve user performance, I feel that it also punishes those of you that have spent the extra $$$ to have the smoothest gaming experience possible.

Can razor or some other dev please explain to me how this inconsistency in difficulty between different computers wasn't foreseen? Or if it was, educate this ungrateful player who seems to think he knows more than you as to why it was implemented?

And if anyone else has noticed this imbalance, let your voice be heard! The more feedback, the better.

Quite simple actually. Take a player and let him play the same area in dayz on two systems. One high end with like constant  60 fps (and max settings) and an old system barely running dayz getting 20 fps. Now try to throw some pvp into the experiment, also try it in a town (fps drop, lag). Compare the results, and ask him which run felt easier. As long as you have a hatchet, doesn't matter if there are 10 spawned zombies or 30, it's the same thing actually since you'll get them in line at a building and start taking them down one by one. Going to zelengorsk and shooting an M4 like a madman attracting every zombie in the area isn't the brighest thing to do, neither the purpose of the game, so you can't use it as proof that this system is wrong. Also take into consideration that you were 2 people, not 1 (zombies x 2).

Playing on high fps and high settings is much easier than struggling with >30 fps with constant screen tearing, desync, etc. This system is not supposed to punish people with expensive rigs, but give a chance to people with lower end rigs. If all people got few zombies, it'd be easier for people with high end pcs, if all people got many zombies it'd be harder for people with old pcs.

Don't forget that zombies are supposed to be the real threat in this game. So the more zombies the better. Complaining about this seems a bit silly. Just learn to use the hatchet and conserve your ammo.

Infected don't spawn relative to your computer specs. That is completely false.

False. Infected and loot spawns are relative to fps. Check here and here (search for dynamic).

I've heard rumours of this but not from a dev's mouth. Would be nice to hear confirmation either way.

Dev confirmation would be nice.

I may have come across as whining. Because I'm a whiner. But what I was originally trying to get at is that maybe the big discrepancy among players' moaning/boasting is this difference in PC quality.

I'm not a great player and I have not struggled with infection in the slightest. I am beginning to think that this mechanic might be a big part of why.

My own experience confirms this. I've wondered of this as well.

When I had a shitty pc people complained about infected being too hard; I didn't understand.

Now I have an awesome pc and I complain about infected being too hard; I understand why people with shitty pcs don't get it.

HOWEVER, better pc always wins. My kill/death ratio has gone way up. I can see so clear, so far now. I don't have to wait like 5 minutes for loot to finally ffs spawn up.

On a side note, there was a week period where zombie spawn was out of control. I remember running down main road in Berenzino with no less than fifty zombies chasing. I actually miss that. Zombie hit damage was lower, but it was total mayhem! Seems I remember the mod used to spawn more zombies generally. I miss that.
