Horrible Framerates on a 7970

Recommended Posts

Okay.. I just started playing this.. I don't know if it's known, but I've been looking around, and I've been seeing that people are getting great performance on nvidia cards, that are even half of what my card is. So what's the deal?

I get about 10 - 40 FPS on texture detail and object detail very high. Everything else set to lowest possible. I play at 5760x1080 (3 monitors), but I've even tried 1920x1080 (1 monitor) and get about the same performance. My processor is a FX8350 Vishera (8 core) and I have 8GB RAM clocked at 1866MHz.

And that's the strange part, it is only this game..

(I ran these tests with 1920x1080, but still.. Like I stated above, it didn't matter the reso with DayZ)

GTA 4 - Everything maxed: 50 - 100 FPS

Crysis - Everything maxed DX10: 40 - 80 FPS

Saints Row 3 - Everything maxed: 100FPS+

Far Cry 3 - Everything maxed DX11: 40 - 100 FPS

There's usually nothing you can do to fix this common issue. Sometimes ArmA works well, sometimes it doesn't. It's sort of a "performance lottery".

Are you running off a SSD?  Because your video card is more than capable.

Take a look at my guide for improving fps, there may be something you haven't tried yet.  I run DayZ off AMD 7950 3GB on 1 monitor, with an i3 3220 3.3 GHz, 8gb of ram using ramdisk to load important pbo files.  My framerates on a good server outside cities are 50-70, and in cities on a good server are around 30.

Take a look at this as well about FX processors and AmrA 2.  http://forums.unitedoperations.net/index.php/topic/13152-amd-fx-cpus-and-arma-2/

Basically, if you're running a highly-intensive program on an FX processor and it does NOT utilize all your cores (ARMA 2 won't fully utilize anything above 4 cores), go to the BIOS and change the AMD ACTIVE CORE CONTROL to "1 Core per CU (Module)" and overclock as much as you can, and you will gain performance, even if you don't overclock. But if the program DOES utilize all of your cores, setting the CPU to only use 1 core per module will only decrease performance.

Object detail is one of the main FPS killers. Set object detail to 'normal', disable post-process effects and max everything else.

Also, what Cobs said. Multiple logical cores per physical are not helpful for gaming. I'd disable that feature and just run it as a quad-core CPU.
