Okay im kind of confused here i need help with a question

Ever since hatchets were changed can you still use them to harvest lumber?

I cant seem to pick one up since it wants to be a weapon do I have to pick one up first and somehow use it for cutting wood?

I'm seriously starving due to this recent change, I tend to leave animals alone now and I don't have much luck at the moment with finding beans or wood(I have red hunger).
