I have recovered 2 characters. There is a TON of misinformation out there.

Follow these steps. Don't bother attempting without a compass, just respawn. Make sure you have something good to watch because it will possibly take 2 hours.

update fully. Join a 1.7.1.0 server. Ignore warning messages. I did both my characters on Chicago 32. Servers will update, so this must be done VERY soon. run SE until you see map. Log out once you reach map and join an updated server. If you attempt this on a current server you will starve/ die of thirst.
