Checking your ammo in Standalone

Recommended Posts

yeah, but that doesnt mean that it shouldnt be there. holy balls. it should be there but obviously you dont have to use it.

Let me give you a scenario where something similar to this would be useful. If Rocket decided to implement the ability to right-click magazines in the backpack and press "Examine" and "Reload Magazine" then it would be another story. "Examine" could say for example "This magazine is half full" if it has about 15 bullets, whilst "Reload Magazine" lets you reload that one specific magazine you examined. If you have three magazines in your backpack, one with 5 bullets, one with 10 and one with 20, and you examine all of them, then you can right-click the one with 20 bullets and press "Reload Magazine" and it would reload the one with 20 bullets, that's the only way I see something like this would be useful.

well, going into your backpack should and examining your mags should give you an actual number. although im pretty sure rocket is making opening your bag and stuff slower and noisy so you wouldnt want to do that in town. so when your on the run you get a quick representation of how many bullets you have in your clip. but again, it would cause a reload animation of some sort and would take maybe 2 seconds. but you dont need to do it anyway, you can just simply reload and count your shots.

You just said in your current post that I will "hate the stand alone" because I find this animation useless, I don't see how the standalone is relevant to this at all, at least not yet.

The reason why I find this useless? Because, with a little it of brains you don't need to waste time on an animation. Most people shoot away half their mag, then reload to have a full one (leaving then with a half in their backpack). Reloading always loads the most full mag in your backpack. If you have three magazines, shoot away half of one, reload, then you have one full in your gun and one full in the backpack. You know for sure that you can shoot away half the mag and reload again, leaving you with yet another full mag. Next time you reload you know the mag you shot the least bullets with will be reloaded, so just keeping a little bit of track up in your brain will tell you almost exactly how many bullets you have, and when you have them.

- I didn't say you'd hate the Standalone, that was someone else.

- With no HUD for ammo count or amount of magazines, how are you supposed to know when you've run out of full mags and are beginning to dip into half mags? How are you supposed to know you shot half the mag with no way to tell? What's going to happen when you log in and you forgot how many half mags/full mags you have? Instead of having a simple animation to check weight, you want none at all. Everyone can check a weight of a mag, not everyone has good memory, especially in a real firefight, not just semi-auto sniping someone.

I just don't understand your argument. You think your flawed way of doing things in ArmA 2 will work in the SA, therefore there should be no mechanic to check mag weight. It's an animation that takes less than 3 seconds. What is wrong with it?

So you thinks it's more useful to go into your inventory and examine random mags than to be able to examine the mag currently in your gun? Wut.

There's just one question I'd like to ask, as this discussion seems to focus heavily on high-capacity magazines.

Where are you planning on finding all this ammo?

Bullets will be rare, as well as the magazine they belong in. I like the idea of hand-loading each round, and if ammo isn't in abundance like it is currently in the mod, you should have no trouble in keeping track of the ten rounds you possess.

I think it's fair to say ammo won't be that rare. It'll be mags that are rare, which is why this mechanic would suit that well. Being able to do a quick mag check could mean the difference between semi-auto and full-auto when entering a city/town. I would also like the ability to count individual bullets, but that's time consuming and not something you do in the middle of a zombie infested town.

I also like what they got going on in the ACE mod. Instead of knowing the exact amount of rounds in your magazines, when you reload it tells you "This magazine feels empty", "this magazine feels light", etc.

Exactly. I mean Jesus, Rocket can even make an option to disable it if you are bothered by having a realistic ability to feel weight.

I have a feeling we'll be finding a lot of half-empty mags, so there should also be one or two ways to check the amount of ammunition: A quicker way by weight and a slower way by taking out each round and counting them. Weapons with transparent magazines should give an advantage by being able to instantly get an idea of ammo.

I agree.
