Checking your ammo in Standalone

Recommended Posts

I was recently listening Dean Hall talk about how minimal the UI would be in DayZ Standalone and especially the part where he said there would be no ammo count on screen. That it would be up to the player to remember how many rounds he/she had left. While this definately brings some interesting elements as regards player interaction e.g. two players approaching each other, alot of tension, neither quite sure how many rounds they have left until one hears the dead man's click mid firefight.

I do think however that it would be possible to perfect this even more. In my opinion there is a way you could remove some of the player frustration that may go with this game element yet keep the immersion. I got the idea when I was playing Red Orchestra 2 recently, in RO2 you are able to reload as usually by pressing 'R' but by holding 'R' you have a short animation in which your character pulls back the bolt of the rifle or takes out the magazine briefly to check it then you recieve a message like "your magazine is half full" or "your magazine is nearly empty". Because it doesnt tell you exactly how many rounds you have it still retains that tension while also maintaining the realism as it obviously leaves you unable to fire your gun for a brief moment. I think this would really suit DayZ Standalone especially as there are already notifications on the left side of the screen now like "you are hungry". Maybe you could also check exactly how many rounds you have by opening your gear but this would obviously take longer and could not be done in the heat of combat without leaving you too vulnerable.

Let me know if you think this would be a good idea for Standalone.

Why do we need to be told anyways? Why can't we just see the bullets in the mag and have to count ourselves?

The animation pulls out a Stanag mag, holds it there for as long as you want so you can count the amount of bullets left, then puts it back in.

because im sure there is limitations to the dayz SA engine and the other suggestion would be better.

what about the metro LL method, by looking at the side of certain magazines you can count the bullets. this is already in arma 2 on the g36c so shouldn't be too difficult to add this for a few more weapons.

If lets say this does get implemented into the standalone, why don't they do it like 'No More Room In Hell' where you hold down a certain button, do a little amination unloading and taking a look at your clip and your ammo count shows up on the screen for a brief moment.

*Kinda like what morgan said*

But i have a feeling this suggestion will go down the trash chute like 98% of all the other ideas that's appeared on this forum.

How would you know the amount just by looking at the magazine? They're not transparent. I think there should be a short and long ammo check. The short check has your character take out the magazine, and the game gives you an estimate (The magazine is around half full), and a long one, where you take out all of the bullets, and put the bullets back in one at a time while you can count them off.

Yes, the magazine isn't transparent, but you just broke your own logic by saying the character could take out the magazine and check the bullets, how should he do this then?

There's no difference between having the character count the bullets or making the players do it themselves, the magazine isn't transparent so counting the bullets that way would be impossible.

I'm just saying, instead of having a simple animation, then automatically get the amount of bullets in the magazine told to us, make the player actually count them instead of waiting 5 seconds to find out. I mean, what's the point of removing the bullet count up in the corner if we're gonna have a simple 5-second animation that gives us the answer to how many bullets we have left?

How are you supposed to count the number of bullets in a stanag or AK 30rnd mag? There's no slit in them. I like OPs suggestion since its the most realistic out of all the ones here. A G36c mag you can see the bullets, but that's only one mag.

I do think Rocket should implement "mini-games" into the Standalone such as manually reloading a clip, dissembling and cleaning a weapon, and there has to be the ability to play Go Fish.. has to.

I don't see how taking the mag out of a gun tells you how full it is.

weight, also you can press down the bullets to see how deep they go.

Weight.

In RO2, it says "the magazine FEELS half full/full/almost empty."

That's just silly. I don't want messages constantly spamming my screen telling me what's going on.

There should be no real way to see exactly how many bullets are left in your magazine. You look in, see that there's at least some bullets left, and make due with what you have. If you're unsure, you can manually insert bullets into the mag until it's completely full.

Fghcrinctyuncatjb!

It would only happen if you held "R" as OP suggested! There is only three things it can say "full" "nearly empty" or "half full" / "half empty" depending on how unoptimistic/optimistic Ricket is. This is a thing any person can do, literally any person. You don't need military training to feel weight and compare it to how heavy it was before.

Seems kinda useless to me, to be honest. I mean, I know how many bullets each mag got, so if I shoot for a bit then I don't have to waste time on taking out the mag to know that it's half empty (which is why I'd rather want a way to actually count the bullets yourself, it puts the player into action and it's not as "useless" as some text saying the magazine is half full.)

I will resort to what Death Dealer said.

You've obviously never played RO2 veteran before.

I agree with you, there should be a way to unload a mag and check the ammo count, but as a quick check, like something to do in the middle of a gunfight, this mechanic is not useless at all. It's saved my ass plenty of times in Rising Storm.

- Defend against Banzai charge.

- check mag, nearly empty

- reload, repeat.

I will resort to what Death Dealer said.

So what do you want then? You want the game to fax you your mags approximate weight? It's not like its going to be a giant neon and blinking text, it could be subtle and in the bottom middle of the screen. If you think that's intrusive, then I feel sorry for you.

If the standalone is full of animations that tell you how many bullets you have left and such, then yes.

Am I typing in another language?

FULL

ALMOST FULL

ALMOST EMPTY

No numbers. No exact counts. Just a way to check your general bucket count. Holy Jesus.

The animation is just you pulling out a mag for a second, holding it, and putting it back in. One animation. If that makes a game "full of animations" for you, then DayZ must be like play to you.

You just said in your current post that I will "hate the stand alone" because I find this animation useless, I don't see how the standalone is relevant to this at all, at least not yet.

The reason why I find this useless? Because, with a little it of brains you don't need to waste time on an animation. Most people shoot away half their mag, then reload to have a full one (leaving then with a half in their backpack). Reloading always loads the most full mag in your backpack. If you have three magazines, shoot away half of one, reload, then you have one full in your gun and one full in the backpack. You know for sure that you can shoot away half the mag and reload again, leaving you with yet another full mag. Next time you reload you know the mag you shot the least bullets with will be reloaded, so just keeping a little bit of track up in your brain will tell you almost exactly how many bullets you have, and when you have them.

i dont really see the issue you are having if you wont use the feature. if you really want exact, count how many shots your doing :D

Exactly, pay a bit of attention to your shooting and this animation is useless.
