Hello! I'm new and a noob -

Recommended Posts

(Hopefully I didn't post this in the wrong place) So, I was watching a "Top 10 Gaming Controversies" by Angry Joe and in it was a game called War Z which apparently was a very poor rip off of Day Z. War Z had a very interesting concept I had not yet seen before but it was garbage so I thought "Wait, there is someone who did it right?" Unfortunately I found out it was available solely to Arma II: Combined Operations.. I have not even heard of what Arma is! But, the game sounded so much fun.

I read up on the survival.. gutting animals to receive the BEEFCAKE (what). How shoes wear out.. you need to stay alive.. zombies, bandits, average survival time is one hour!? What.. this sounds good! I got pumped. So, about an hour ago I bought Arma II: Combined Operations on GamersGate pretty much only for this mod. So, hello community! One quick question: On my library screen for GamersGate there's no option to download Arma II: Combined Operations, I have to download Arma II and Arma II: Operation Arrowhead seperately. Once I do that.. do they merge into Combined Operations or something? Some information on that would be much appreciated. Arma II apparently is going to take another 3 hours to download and I'll assume the Arrowhead takes 1 hour and Day Z will take 1-2. So, I'll be playing with you guys in about 5-6 hours!

Anything a noob should know before he ventures off into this dangerous land? Thanks in advance.

Don't read tutorials, the game is about trial and error. That is where the fun is. As long as you have booted up both Arma II and Arma II: Operation Arrowhead and got to the main menu of both games it should work.

Alright. I've always liked the "trial and error" system more anyways.. as long as it isn't too convoluted. :o

Get Six Launcher or DayZ Commander. Either of those will save you ballache getting the game patched and working. of the two I find Commander more stable and easier to use, but Six Launcher has access to different addons like rmod...

Horses for courses really. I have them both and use either one depending on the situation.

I can't really help you with downloading info. But I can help you with the game, here are a few tips.

Find a well populated Vanilla server, what I mean by that is a server that has no artificial extras. There are a lot of Private Servers out there where you get starting gear, added loot and hundreds of vehicles. These do not give you the true DayZ experience, they are just easy mode servers where everything is given to you.

But this game is all about your own journey with it, I would advise not to team up with someone who is experienced it will probably ruin the first experience for you. If you can find someone else who is completely new, get on Skype or TS3 with them and teamup. Learn together. It is what me and my friend did and it was awesome, we didn't have a clue but when you're dying and losing all your gear every 15 minutes you quickly learn what to do and what not to do. I can now survive for days of game time with little difficulty.

The more you put into the game, the more you will get out from it. There is nothing like finding your first gun after hours of looking, with the immense sense of reward that comes with it and 5 minutes later 'Pop' you've been head shotted by a bandit you can't even see. You will feel so frustrated, you will probably close the game and feel like removing it from your computer. But you will be back on in the next hour giving it another chance.

I don't want to give you too much help about the game because I feel it would ruin it for you. But I can tell you some things about the HUD. On the right hand side of your screen, around the middle right you will see an Ear and an Eye icon. Next to these will be bars coming out of them. This shows how loud and how visible you are to zombies, the more bars, the more visible. This is dependant on movement and the 'loudness' of what you are running on. If you are too visible or too loud you will get zombies chasing you. Try to make yourself as quiet as possible, don't run on roads, run on the grass next to them. Running is louder than crouching which is louder than proning, you will need to utilize all of these to get good survivability.

Then you get in the bottom right hand corner an icon of a Thermometer, a bottle, a blood drop and food. Thermometer is temperature, but at the stage of the game you don't need to worry about it too much. The bottle is your thirst, as you spawn in it will be full and will slowly empty, when it is empty you need to drink otherwise you will start losing blood (health). The blood drop is your health, Infection, thirst, hunger and getting hit by zombies or shot will lower this. When the drop is empty, you die, when it is low you will fall unconscious at random times. Also you will get blurred and discoloured images. To get blood back you can eat preferably meat, and to a lesser extent canned food, or to get full blood back another player has to give you a blood transfusion, which requires a blood bag on the other player.

This is only a mod though, there are a lot of bugs and general problems with it. However it is still very enjoyable, IMO.

And remember trust nobody!

@AntiHero: What is SixLauncher and DayZ Commander, exactly? Are they submods or ...

@JoeM: Thanks for the information! I look forward to attempting survival out in the woods. :P I've always wanted a game where if you die it actually means something.. not just if you die you can resurrect yourself instantly etc. But I thought such games wouldn't exist since people would get too mad of dying and just leave the game after they got far. I'll see how well I can survive on my own. :o

They are the mods launchers, you choose which one to download when you click "Download" in the main page.

It's the easiest way to download dayz patches and other mods it's a one click command otherwise you have to install manually which can be a pain.

How shoes wear out..

Anything a noob should know before he ventures off into this dangerous land? Thanks in advance.

Everything else you heard is correct but shoes will wear out only in the Standalone Version of DayZ that will be released this year, so far Rocket the creator of DayZ said that Alpha version of Standalone DayZ will be released somewhere between 2 months and tomorrow. But Anything noob should know? Try to get a friend who plays this game, one good way is to check this forum, next. Manage your supplies, you need ammo, gun, food and drinks, also bandages and painkillers are good to carry with you, any tools you find (knifes, map, compass) are also good. Aslo try not to be too friendly most of the people will shoot you on sight.
