The Axe as a melee weapon glitched?

So I finally found an axe, and was happily smashing zombies without drawing the attention of the herd. I then started picking up supplies, some chem lights here, some road flares there. Then some zombies jumped me, and I proceeded to whack them with the axe, but all my character would do was throw the flares/chem lights!? The axe was still equipped, but there was no way to start attacking again...

Is it glitched?

Thanks, I'll try that next time this happens. I didn't know that picking useables up after having a weapon equipped switched what you had equipped. Because the axe was still in my hand lol!
