I'm about to change what PC I'm playing on, will my character be saved? My friend says yes as he says a character is tied to a CD key.

He is correct. Your player is tied to your CD key. As long as you use the same copy of the game, you could play in Canada one day, and Australia the next, and your character will be the same.

But good luck getting from Canada to Australia in 1 day and still having time to play DayZ
