Suggestion: Hunting Snares and Traps

Recommended Posts

Suggestion

I think it would be great to see snares/traps for catching animals or fish. It would make a lot of sense in the survival context. Actively hunting is usually much less successful than trapping, especially with fish. For this reason, people surviving in the wild for extended periods are often forced to use traps. Otherwise they don't have time to make things, build fires, create shelters etc. I would expect that most people could work out a decent method given enough time.

Possible Implementation

  • The trap would be a placeable loot box with a selected set of loot tables based on the type of trap constructed.
  • Time elapsed from the setting and harvesting of the trap could effect the loot.
  • Trap placement could effect the loot.
  • Other players can raid your traps.

Associated Possibility

  • Trapping skill or hidden mechanic that increases with practice.

Cheers,

Thom

Great ideas. For me the further away from dayz deatjmatch we go and nearer to a real survivor apoc game the better. I love the PvP aspect but more stuff like this can only enrich the experience.

If this is implemented, please make sure that players can spring the traps as well.

I don't know how many times I've died in Fallout from rigged shotguns but it was worth it.

you cant die from a snare, or get trapped. (humans are too smart to get trapped in snares)

Don't underestimate idiots (like me) but fortunately what you say is true for most humans.

Spiked pits would hurt like hell though, they also qualify for hunting traps when properly concealed. Being able to make a trap that launches a spear when sprung would be quite neat as well but that might be going beyond what's possible in the Arma engine.

I agree a spiked pit would probably hurt, though i never tried it and i dont know how much a sharpened wooden pole does to a man when he is falling from lets say 30cm? there is a limit on how deep you can dig, but it would do some damage. maybe with a failroll?

Actually i think all traps should have a failroll and a damage dice. they could critically hit you or barely hit you..

there is no raeson why you should everytime set your foot in the middle of the beartrap :P

I was going to include the idea of booby traps for PvP, but I figured that it had probably already been beaten to death. I'd be perfectly satisfied if it just helped in collecting food. At any rate, I think it would be pretty fun to build and set the traps. It could add more depth to the game. Thanks for the feedback.

Cheers,

Thom
