My (technically) First Story

Recommended Posts

Hello all.

So, I've been looking at DayZ for around a year now but I've never had a PC to run it. Recently I got a really good deal on a desktop so I bought ARMA: CO about 2 weeks ago but I haven't had a chance to play as exams are really starting to pick up now.

I play on a private hive, name is something like "Balkan DayZ".

(NB: I knew quite a bit about DayZ before I started playing so I'm in the know but with no practical experience)

I spawned at "Power Plant", near Elecktro. I ran all the way to the power plant and looted the firehouse. Found a AKS-74u but no ammo, took it anyways. Run to the other firehouse, find a G17 and 2 clips for it, and other basic stuff. As I'm running into the town centre I hear multiple gunshots from at least 3 people. I'm trying to meet a friend at the school, but I hit the supermarket near first. As I'm looting, my friend (who knows quite a few languages) says that in chat 2 people are discussing in Swedish how to combat 2 ghillie snipers who are in Cherno. This server has kill messages i.e "Player was killed by Player2 with Weapon_DMR at 300m."

I take little notice of my friend's comment and I loot the supermarket, picking up a few vital items and a 1911 with 4 clips (I had 2 already). As I'm crossing the road to the school, I get shot and I more-or-less instantly die. I see in chat that I was killed by a "Toni". I ask him why and he says he's testing a new weapon or something.

Now, de-ja-vu kicks in and I spawn at the power plant again, but with exactly the same loot I had when I died. Not needing to loot my dead body, I go to the firehouses again and find hardly anything apart from a even better backpack than I had picked up earlier. As I'm clearing out the supermarket near the school, I hear flies and take cover quickly. As I round the corner at the back, I notice a body. Looting it, I see it has a L85 Holo, 4 clips for it, and some assorted medical supplies, and not much else. My friend is in the school, still waiting, and as I cross the road again though a more-covered way, I yet again get shot and die by the hands of "Toni". Someone (not sure who, might of been Toni) says "Destroyer you picked up my weap xD". I see that I was killed by a L85 so I think it was him. (This server had 3 donator kits and I'm 99% sure a L85 Holo is in one of them)

As I spawn again, I'm unfortunately in Kameka. Suiciding off a rail bridge, I spawn (AGAIN) near the power plant and this time my friend has moved to the power plant with his Lee-Enfield. As we both loot the power plant firehouse, I pick up a MP5 and a few mags for it, as well as a 1911. I see in the player list that Toni is no longer on, so we go back to the school and the supermarket. Nothing really in the supermarket, and I can't find my bodies where I died, so we head into the school to plan what we are doing next. As we do this, I spot a player coming in the front with a double-barrelled shotgun and I shout friendly in the direct VOIP. This "Alex" replies the same back, and we loot the school together. As we are in a hotspot for players, we kindly request in chat that Alex leaves us to out business and we wish him luck. He agrees and we go to the Elecktro firehouse. My friend ("FNG") picks up a few LE mags and I get a MP5 clip. As we are leaving, we notice Alex is still following us. Repeating what we said earlier, he doesn't reply this time. He had aggroed a few zombies, so we had to flee to the church nearby. Inside, I say over VOIP "Why are you still following us?" He blankly looks at me, then as I'm moving away my friend (we were talking over Steam's voice chat) tells me to move as Alex has just shot at me with his shotgun. I quickly turn around, and (I had put the MP5 in my backpack and I was using a LE) I put a round in his chest. He hits my friend and Alex faints so I put one in his head and I kill him. By now, about 20 zombies are glitching around the church door. I give blood to my friend and go to loot Alex. He starts swearing at us in side but me and my friend explain that 1. he shot first, and 2. we did ask kindly a few times if he would stop following us. He didn't have anything decent on him, so we ate and drank and worked out we would go up to a car I had stashed up north (the previous night a kind person had given me the Humvee after we had looted the NWAF and a heli crash site, me keeping all the loot bar a M107 already in the car).

As we are about to leave, he spots another player and we take cover. He shoots him once and he drops, and we can hear that just outside our view, he is being eaten by zombies. About 20 seconds later, we notice he has died. He only had a hatchet and basic gear. Then, another player with an axe rushes in and swipes my friend. We drop him near the entrance and again, basic loot. As we are trying to work out what has happened, another player with a LE somehow sneaks in and, as we all have LEs and look the same, a sort of Mexican standoff happens. I tell my friend we can identify each other as the other guy will probably shoot one of us, so I say to wait for a shot. Sure enough the guy tries to hit me and my friend drops him. With all the bodies amounting, my friends skin changes to a bandit one. As we are about to leave, ANOTHER person arrives, who I think was Alex again, with an axe and this time I drop him (at the time of this story, I was playing on a laptop averaging around 20 fps, so it was a little hard to aim). With around 5 to 6 bodies, we quickly scan for loot, nothing decent apart from some food, and we head out towards a shack past the power plant. As we are passing a small pond/lake, we hear gunshots landing hear us. I take cover from a distance (now with my MP5, dropped the LE and gave the ammo to my friend) and my friend tries to find the source of the shots. He doesn't find the guy but gets shot and killed. I hide for around 5 minutes while my friend runs back, respawning nearby. As I'm scanning with my binoculars, I spot the aggressor, going towards a hill on the opposite. Having a MP5, and with my aiming problems, there's no way I can get him. If I fire, he has a rifle of some sort so he will easily kill me. I follow him, running to close the distance but I lose him over the hill. As my friend finds his body, to his amazement the aggressor has taken his LE and in place of it dropped his FN-FAL, a no-scoped variant. We quickly deduce that he took the LE as he had no ammo apart from half a clip left in the FAL.

We started to run up the coast, hoping to find a car or the aggressor, and eventually went to a few deer stands and the castle at Rog. There was a helicopter there, a Huey, but it was damaged way beyond use. There was a M16 of some sort (my friend opened up the gear first) but when he attempted to remove it, it glitched and disappeared. We moved up to a small town, where I had to go and I logged out, my friend following suite.

A prequel to come, about how I got the car and my first ever player kill.

First experiences are always memoriable.

Was it a different feeling watching gameplay and then playing yourself?

The night before, I was on my own, my friend logging out earlier. I was heading to Starry Sobor, hoping to loot the military tents there.

When I arrived, I saw a player so I waited for him to disappear. I see in chat that 2 people are trying to repair a car. I ask if I can help and they say that they have done it. I ask for a pickup, and as I'm waiting I start to hear a car arrive. A Humvee with only 1 player, in a ghillie suit, pulls up near a broken Huey and I hear his horn. I finish my looting (finding a AK74 and a few mags for it, plus a PDW and some ammo) and I go towards the car. I slightly panic when the guy gets out, but he just checks the Huey's gear and then gets back in. We drive to a secluded part of the NWAF, at the far end barracks. While looting it, we find a nice-looking assault rifle, something like a SA-38, which uses AKM mags. I ask if he needs it and he says no, so I take it (he was pretty well equipped). We loot the rest of the NWAF, bar the hangers, and on the way out we spot a heli crash site. I open the gates for the car, and I run over to loot. Best item was a DMR and another clip for it, so I put that in the gear of the car and we drove off. He then asks me where I want to be dropped off, so I say devil's castle. On the way, he explains that he has a base somewhere on the server, with a few cars and a heli. There's a heli at the castle, as expected it was broken beyond use. He drops me off, but before I get out he says I can have the car. I say is he sure, he says he doesn't need it. Thanking him, he says he is just going to take the M107 in the gear, I happily agree (it's hard to snipe with lag). I drive off as he logs out in the castle.

This next part was the next day, but before the story in the original post.

When I logged on, the car was still where I had hid it. I decided to leave it where it was and run back up to the devil's castle. I took a M9SD out of the car and swapped it out for my PDW. When I enter the castle, I have to shoot a few zombies with my M9, and I run into the tower. It has no decent loot, so I come out and enter a small building near the entrance to the castle. Suddenly, I spot a player standing a meter away from me. As I stand there slightly shocked, he turns around and starts unloading into me just as I do the same. Somehow, I win and his body falls to the floor as I'm bleeding really badly. I bandage and attempt to self-bloodbag but I can't as I'm "in combat". I run back to my car, load up the guy's gear that I recovered (G36, rangefinders) and I put them in gear. I wait and then self-bloodbag. I drive back up to Starry and on the way I'm trying to find out who I killed. I find out his name was "Wild Dog", and luckily for me his friend was also in the castle and knew I was there but he only had a revolver and couldn't shoot me as he needed painkillers. I see a UAZ parked in a bush near the road on the way to SS. I hide my Humvee and I go to the UAZ. Apart from low fuel, it's green in everything. In the gear, it has nothing special apart from things like engine parts and windscreen glass so I'm thinking this car is "owned". I hide both cars and run around a ridge near the military camps. I spot another car on the way there but it was all in yellow with a bit of fuel, nothing in the gear. As I'm coming out of the military tents (with a AK74) I pass the Huey and a DMR opens fire on me. I get killed but luckily I had anticipated this so I had put all my good gear in the Humvee (forgetting about my NVG's and RF, but it was a always-day server anyways). I asked the guy in chat why he opened fire and he said "because that's what I do". He said he only took my rangefinders but it was too much hassle to go and retrieve my body anyways. My Humvee is (hopefully) still where it was. From here, the original story takes over, and the end of that is how I am at the current moment...

Was the game different from playing it to watching it?

You should find a nice vanilla server so you can get a proper experience of the original dayz before you get used to all of the helis humvess and mass military hardware , a far better experience.. just my opinion. :) Many of us did not see a set of wheels for weeks and for some, months. Was very cool though and makes you appreciate something simple as a bicycle find after a week

I got introduced to DayZ through watching other people play it and was fascinated, then when Steam had a sale on Combined Ops I said why not, let's try it out. You don't get an appreciation for what DayZ is by watching it, that's for sure. It's an experience, not a game. There have been times when I've played where I have almost literally crapped my pants or had a heart attack, either because I've got myself into a sticky situation or because I've found some badass loot that I desperately don't want to lose. It's strange where the adrenaline comes from - I remember finding my first sniper rifle (a CZ of course) and thinking jackpot!! My heart was racing and I wanted to get the hell out of there before I died. Which is unique to DayZ because in almost every other game I've ever played picking up a weapon, especially a crap one, isn't a big deal. But it is in DayZ. Even finding a box of matches or a map is still a big deal for me, even after all this time playing, just because every little piece of survival gear you can find or that can make your life easier is one step closer to not dying. So every bit of gear is a small thrill, until you've played DayZ you can't possibly understand that.

Of course I died btw 15 min after getting that CZ :)

Heh, the first ever weapon of any sort I found was a CZ550.

Also, my story so far (last played yesterday)

I log in and I'm near some small town near Rog. My friend's in a clan match and is therefore occupied, so I'm on my own. I mark where my Humvee is hidden and it's 5+km away, which is going to take a while. After about 5-10 minutes, I suddenly spot something black on a dirt road in the distance. Going closer, I see its a SUV! I praise my luck for finding a car and I check the area to make sure it's not a quite-stupid trap. When I get in the car, I see its green in everything plus full fuel. I can't really remember what's in the gear but it was basic stuff.

After a bit of driving I pull up around 100m from my Humvee and to my relief it's still there. However, I start to worry when I notice that's it has definitely been moved from were I put it. Coming closer on foot, I notice a bicycle about 10m away from the Humvee. Fearing the worst, I check the Humvee and it's been fuelled up; now my focus goes to gear. To my surprise my SA-38 thingy is still there, although the DMR is gone and in its place a Lee Enfield. Parking up the SUV and getting in my Humvee to move it, I notice that a UAZ is near the same spot I found one in before. I check it and it's all-green and middle fuel, with nothing in the gear. I drove the Humvee to another slightly-better hiding spot and I log out.

Someone found my hiding spot, yet they used it for themselves? Interesting...

More to come...
