Temperature

Recommended Posts

So, just been playing with the ACEX_SM enabled and the rain sounds gave a really nice authentic feel to being out in the pouring rain.(unlike normally where it is just annoying) Different strengths of rain over time and other nice things like frog sounds etc.

Anyway, I noticed my temperature gauge, whilst running, wasn't going down, it isn't supposed to I know. However it should.

Temperature in my opinion doesn't have the effect it should in this game. If your outside in effectively a shirt with a vest over the top, and a pair of jeans, your going to get extremely wet and cold. Running or not, you will get cold quickly and can often fall ill within a few days after. Your clothes will be wet for hours if they aren't dried out, and, without going into a Ray Mears style lecture, your going to come down badly. At the minute temperature doesn't affect you whilst running around. I don't care who you are you'll get cold very quickly in the wild if you wore the clothes you wear in DayZ.

So why not make body temperature, caused by changing weather conditions and player actions like going in lakes etc more of a concern to players. If you become cold and wet from the rain, your temperature will reduce quickly, and going indoors, or under heavy foliage, will be a priority, obviously giving it's cons of going near Zeds/players. Fires should increase temperature quicker, but maybe a few minutes are required to try and dry out the clothes (when the rain has stopped). This is turn makes players vulnerable. Heatpacks also shouldn't instantly warm a person up like they do currently. If you are exposed to the elements and consume something to warm the body, your clothes will still be sodden, your still going to be cold and wet.

If it means your out in the sticks and it begins to rain and you have to take shelter in a tent (theres an idea), or get into a building for a bit until it calms down then so be it.

Thoughts?

I also would like to see more difficult environmental factors. Currently the fn_temperatur.sqf that controls player body temperature change is rather forgiving. I prefer the system on Namalsk where altitude severely effects body temperature, and getting caught out in the rain on Celle can be pretty brutal without proper clothing.

I always assumed this is how it's supposed to work except the temp is just broken for the moment.

Namalsk has a good system I find except you get cold a wee-bit too often and too quickly.

If you look at the code, there is a function to raise player temperature when inside buildings, but is apparently not used. I wonder if this will change in the new patch?
