Rage VG 4033 Posted April 29, 2013 I was thinking, "What if there were a thread for both Server owners to be able to list their hive in a format that's user friendly, and for players to be able to find a server with the things they are looking for (Custom start gear, increased vehicles, pure vanilla, etc)?"The stickied thread hasn't been updated since December, so I have no reason to assume it's still being attended. Would you guys (Both server/community owners and wandering players alike) be interested in something like this? Or maybe you'd be interested in doing this yourself? If people want this done, but nobody is willing to do it, I'm up for giving it a try. I'm thinking along the lines of being able to just click on the thread, scroll down to, say, "Takistan", look for "Custom Vehicles", go to "UK Servers", and find any UK based Takistan servers that have Custom Vehicles.I'd have to spend some time fiddling to find a format that I find convenient to update, but I feel as though I haven't been contributing to the DayZ community as much as other people, and I'd like to take a crack at changing that. So, yeigh or neigh? I'd appreciate logical reasons For or Against, or just some ideas on how it could be implemented and kept reliably up-to-date.
Suzie (DayZ) 13 Posted April 29, 2013 I'd say it will be very useful for players that are looking for specific servers. However, it will require a LOT of work to keep it up-to-date at all times.

But surely there's only so many servers out there, right? Eventually I won't have to update it so much. I'm sure I could check it every other day and update. {GBYC} EvilBunny 61 Posted April 29, 2013 i think the server count is up to about 7k at the moment maybe 6k solid at anyone time.. even if you assume only 50% of those are private then that's still over 3k servers that need to be checked every other day to ensure they are still up and running..the idea would be great and having a catalogue of active good validated servers would be immense but i think logistically checking over 3000 servers a day to update the catalogue would be an insane task to undertake solo... if i had the time i could create an server checker for you to run that basically would ping a list of ips and create a *.txt file listing all servers that are currently up and which ones are down... but those undergoing restart at the time you ran it would be listed as down.. which would technically be unfair as they were just out for about 3mins.other than automating the process though i doubt a catalogue could be maintained with an up to date list much more than once per week...

I could do it at different times of the day each week. If it's down 3 times in a row, it'd be removed. However, and don't take this personally, but I do not run any sort of files I get from the forums. The idea's good, but I don't think the thread would be used to such a wide scale. If a server's down, someone could post and report it as such.As I've sat down and thought about it, it does seem like a bleak possibility for me to do this all manually. I got to thinking, that I could instead do it for DayZ groups that are looking for members, or members looking for groups. I'm just spit-balling at this point. dayz247 59 Posted April 29, 2013 Well.....You would really want to think about making this to where it was as easy as possible on you..... cut out some of the work you would need to do.Things to consider:Allow server owners to input their own servers (require: server name)Automated checked (if server is down for more than 3 times in a row..... or if server name changes, is flagged for removal).- You could be nice and allow server owners to input an e-mail alerting them when their server is about to be removedAllow server owners to modify listing..... in case they change hosts or name or whatever.Just my initial thoughts.
Suzie (DayZ) 13 Posted April 29, 2013 Just my brainstorm thoughts...I think the most efficient way to do this is make a live serverlist on a seperate webpage.Users can submit their servers, which then get added to the serverlist and if a random statuscheck fails 3 times in a row, the server gets deleted or listed as DOWN until the specific server gets 10 successfull statuschecks in a row.
Rage VG 4033 Posted April 29, 2013 Well, thank you for your input. I think I'll have to put this plan on the backburner until I have the time to either learn how to do that myself, or find someone willing to help me with it. Feel free to keep posting ideas either here or in my inbox, they're much appreciated ^^
dayz247 59 Posted April 29, 2013 http://gameq.sourceforge.net/Take a look at that for getting the server name.Actually wouldn't be all that difficult to do, thinking about it. Would require some time, and a good bit of writing php lol.

machine6fd 16 Posted April 29, 2013 (edited) This can all be done via dayz commander with ping and player count. how would this be better than that(if the admin put info in the server title)? <- not judging your idea just curious how you could make this better than that. Suzie (DayZ) 13 Posted April 29, 2013 Because not every DayZ player uses DayZ Commander. Some prefer Six Launcher.
