Some Biology Tips for the new "Die by Disease" System

Hi.

So I was reviewing the various parts of the human reproductive system (for Biology) and starting thinking about micro molecules and the human immune system.

Because I don't want a bunch of tl;dr responses, I'll keep this short and non nerdy.

When you body is afflicted by a disease, antibodies and memory cells form in your body. Memory cells form a kind of "Mold" and replicate, and use this mold to identify the cause of the disease in case the bacteria or virus that so caused it is reintroduced into the body, post-disinfection.

Because your body develops more and more of these molds, if you will, diseases that you are introduced to several times become easier and easier to fight, until you acquire immunity.

What does this mean in DayZ?

I would like to see positive health choices (fresh vegetables, cooked meat, et cetera) and fighting off a disease help you develop a % benefit to fighting off diseases. IE, if you gain 5%+ vs the common cold, and there's a 98% of catching the CC by drinking dirty water, you instead of a 93% chance.

PROS

  • Rewards better character managment
  • Realistic
  • Help you develop your alter-ego "Survivalist pro"

CONS

  • Rewards players who can play more often than others
  • Spammable; even if the % you gain is horribly slow, someone sitting in an Elektro hospital on an empty server can drink water and pop meds over and over again until they're near-/immune to disease
  • Long-surviving "Pros" would quickly lose the threat of disease, which is one of the reasons Rocket added it in the first place
  • Give more reasons to play on empty servers

Don't worry, Deans Brother is a virologist and has been helping Dean get the virus/infection mechanic for the SA spot-on. There was a thread a while ago where he was discussing it, I'll try and get the link for you because it's interesting stuff.

IMO the disease mechanic in the SA could be the biggest game changer of all the things being added.

That's a great read- I'm all for a disease resistance mechanic- perhaps though he Highlands of the map and the cities could have different diseases or variants so that you are never safe?

Like in the city, dust and ash gives you lung cancer, but in the forests and whatnot the lakes/ponds/whatever and the transevaporating plants put deadly water vapor in the air?

Yeah something like that. Because cities are more likely to have better combat against disease than remote locations. I'm not one for specifics but perhaps a presence % of a certain disease in different sections of the map?

Right. You can't catch the common cold in a dry, warm environment.

I'd love to see positive and negative diets creating an impact on immunity for diseases.

From what I heard, Rocket had said that diseases could possibly be a larger threat than zombies would be.

Nice idea, but there are a few exploitable points. Some Players will probably just purposely get themselves sick and take meds to insta-heal. So I have two ways to prevent that. First, make it that if you use meds to speed up healing, immunization should not build up as fast as it normally would, with the exception of vaccines. Second, there should be an overdose/addiction system. IRL painkillers, especially oxytocin are addictive, and so is morphine. If you take too many painkillers, you should constantly need them or you get the shakes, sickness, and other affects.

Yeah, the forum moderator above left a link to that. I'm honestly scared to play the SA. Like... I think I'll cry within 20 minutes. This is exactly how its going to go:

Log in.

Die. Fuck.

Respawn.

Chased by zombies.

Break legs. Fuck.

Respawn.

Find a dead body with a FN FAL, AS50, 9 billion rounds of ammo and food.

You have AIDS/Cholera/Dysentery/Influenza/Chicken Pox/Small Pox... you pretty much have the entire dictionary. Fuck.

You sound like you didn't read the entire page. In fact, I'm actually 100% dead positive I said the very same thing, that the system would be exploitable. Yep, I'm reading it right now. What did I say? Yeah, that's exactly what I said... in different words, but same concept.

Excepted you cannot develop an imunity to cancer :)
