Alerting zombies and how to avoid.

Recommended Posts

Hoi, I'm new to DayZ. Started playing three DayZ ago (c wat i did thar?), so, yeah, still a nab. One of the things I'm having the most trouble is is the zombies.

Sometimes a zombie is alerted to me and starts raging and charging when I'm prone in the grass, not making a sound nor being seen.

Sometimes I can being sneaking around, and some zombie 50 metres down the road gets pissed off starts to chase me - yet there are other zombies in the same area who are much closer to me (5-10 metres) who don't give a shit. How does the zombie detection thingy work? Is it meant to actually work like that?

Any tips for successful sneaking would be great, too.

If you manage to figure out how the zombie aggro system works, I highly recommend you buy a lottery ticket.

Zombies are buggy in DayZ. Sometimes they don't recognize you at all, the next moment they see you from 300m away while proned.

You can sneak pretty effectively during the night. Zombies can hear better than they can see. So avoid streets, dirtroads and other loud undergrounds. While crossing a street at night, use shift-walk.

Just rush into a city and try to get rid of them by cutting corners, run through a building (zombies cant run inside buildings) and using pine trees or big bushes as hideout.

Nice to know it's the zombies, not me. :o

Didn't know about cutting corners, nor hiding in bushes. If you hide in a bush/pinetree, do they go away eventually?

They can't hit you in a pinetree and they often lose interest in you. :)

You can also try to break the line of sight. This might help too.

Double tap W to sprint.

This makes EVERY zombie see you.

BUT if you hit "X" while sprinting, you "Crouch" and your sigh/noise detector disappears while off of concrete/roads.

Weird glitch, lots of fun. You can run between zombies without agroing any.

It's not anymore cheating than TS3, Skype, or Steam Chat.

And actually no it's not cheating at all; it's exploiting.

It's pretty hard to pin down the exact details of zombie aggro, as many have said, but I do know that sight plays a large roll. Perhaps the one far away was facing you and the closer ones weren't? That could be part of it. If you absolutely can't aggro them, do your best to keep to zeds backs or around corners and behind cover, out of their line of sight. As long as you change your speed according to your terrain, you should be fine.

Once they do aggro though, move quickly and try to keep your distance from them. There's plenty you can do from there.

-Look for a building with 2 entrances that you can run though. In the mod, Zeds can't run indoors, so this usually loses them.

-Vault over low fences to create distance. Zeds can't do that, so they have to go around.

-Run around tight corners to break line of sight, and find another to go around before the zed gets around the first. This will lose them if you're quiet afterwards.

-If in a non-ubran area, run through multiple bushes and pine trees to break line of sight. You won't be hurt if you stay in the pine tree either.

-Find a steep hill or slope that your character can't run directly up. Zeds walk slower than humans, so you can easily lose them.

-By some bug with the water, zeds can't go on any structure with water underneath. If in a pinch on the coast, find the docks of the town or a bridge with water under it.

my speculation is, that every Z has a chance to spot you, with modificators applying for range, lighting, sound etc., and the game tests against that dynamically modified value in regular time periods. so if you basically (and i pull numbers out my ass now) roll a 1 on a 1-100 roll, you critically failed and be spotted despited being prone in the bush, but if you roll a 100 on that 1-100 roll, you wont be spotted despite Z looking you into your face.

To lose the Zed's, I will either do the tried and true zig zag up a hill, particularly a wooded / forest bearing hill or... my favorite.... I will run a figure 8, looping around buildings / obstructions. This works a large percentage of the time. Hands down the worst thing you can do is run in a straight line in clear line of sight of the Zed chasing you,.

I once sprinted right in front of a zombie and it didn't notice me. Then, the other time I got mauled when I was crawling around in grass.

Zombie detection is tweaked in various ARMA 2 Beta versions. Personally, I haven't seen any really weird aggro for a while now.

Not sure about detection but I found out a few days ago. If you use the in game voice chat that also alerts zombies.
