Sound and distance

A friend I play with, always seems to hear gunshots and screaming zombies before they're in our faces, but I very rarely hear gunshots in the distance, and occasionally I don't hear the zombie scream even when it doesn't seem like it's that far away, but he does.

We have the same onboard sound, the same "sound sampling" though I don't know if that makes a difference. I have HD555's headphones.

If someone could suggest some tweaks that would be great.
