karlspartan 0 Posted April 3, 2013 (edited) So, total noob question. How do I start? I think i am to begin a fight for survival on a beach with a couple cans of beans, but I'm given the choice between different maps, scenarios and rule sets. i didnt buy all the DLC, just the two necessary to play the mod, so it seems as though i will need to start a private server for now, correct? when i try to do that though, im confused. i was expecting a zombie MMO with very fractured servers and awesome hardcore ruels, but it seems more like SOCOM type servers. if that's the case, i guess i understand why the fact that they save your game position in a separate database is so special a bit better, but it makes me understand less how there are different maps and rule sets and stuff, and also how i start on a beach with some beans. herrjon 478 Posted April 3, 2013 (edited) There is a public hive where all you start with is bandage, flashlight, painkillers, and Patrol Pack, regardless of server. This hive is only on Chenarus, with not additional mods to it like DayZ+ or 2017. The rest are private hives where the admin can change starting gear, map, vehicle limit, etc. Some don't, but most do to some degree.Just use dayz commander and hide all unofficial servers if you want the vanilla dayz experience. Not to say all private servers are all "custom loadout, new buildings, base building, 5 billion vehicles, choppers for everyone" but the public hive servers can't change that. As for downloads, just need Arma II, Operation Arrowhead, DayZ mod, and update your Arma II beta patch. You can download other maps, but all servers that run non-chenarus maps are private and typically have some quirk to them. karlspartan 0 Posted April 3, 2013 (edited) ok, so i should launch the game through commander rather than steam. after downloading it it seems that commander gives me a better grip on things. i just installed an update that steam wouldn't have presented me with. it also allowed me to filter out servers and get going. cherno map. thanks guys.
