View distance capped?d

It seems that the view distance is always capped at 500, which is pretty lame. One of the best things about arma 2 and chernarus is the vast map size and the realistic view distances, and this really degrades that immersive aspect. Just wondering about the reasoning and when it will be fixed

View distance changes depending on the weather, if the day is clear you can see up to 1000m if I am correct.

I gues it's a gameplay decision to avoid that snipers with a good rifle kill players that are more than 1000m away. I don't think it would do the mod any good if this was possible. This isn't Arma with fixed teams that deploy dedicated snipers and marksmen.

Also Chernarus can be very taxing on computers.

Getting a 1km sniper kill in Arma is ludicrously difficult against other players' date=' especially when you have no idea where to look, except for build up cities with constant cover and view obstruction. If someone actually managed such a feat, they completely deserve such a kill. I can't even think of a place where it would be viable to camp from 1km and actually expect a player to kill, so it shouldn't even be part of the discussion

Irrelevant, since players can just set their view distance to what their computers can handle.

Nope. When I played as sniper in PR: Arma 2 on Chernarus and Takistan I ended up with quite a lot of kills, sometimes exceeding ranges of 1300m. Without ACE (wind simulation) it is fairly easy to hit even moving targets at a distance of 1000m+ if you have the right weapon and a bit of practice. I'm not sayin it is easy but it is definatly doable.

Sure, when you have an objective, an exceptionally rare (DayZ-wise) sniper rifle, and two-team based gameplay, it can happen. But when the only places you can rely on camping for more than one kill a day are two built up cities heavily based on cover, and there are no vantage points at all around those that you could reliably use. Even if there is, there's dozens of rows of buildings in the way.

What's the point of having non-CZ snipers with better scopes and zeroing if they arent allowed to be used for what they are for

I admit I actually wouldn't mind a bit higher viewdistance. I usually play with 4000-5000m on Chernarus.

But for me it would be easy to randomly snipe players at high distances with a good rifle. 1000m are no problem for anyone who played arma for a while. Not that I would do that. It's not my style. I'm just saying that I can do it.

I'm at almost 4000 Humanity after being down to 1500 in the first week. Says it all I think.

I would like longer view distances just so I could see people coming to kill me from farther away.

I think the servers generally cap view distance at around 1500-1600. It's a good middle ground that both high-end and low-end computers can handle. I don't think cranking it up past about 1500 on the client side will have much of an effect unless the view distance on the server is set higher.
