I'm wondering if there is a certain way to log off properly? I don't seem to keep my gear when I leave a server and join another one. I know there are public and private servers which will affect it so maybe that's where I'm going wrong.

Yep. Public servers save your gear so you can reload on them.

Private servers do the same but you can only load gear from that server, no swapsies.

Solution- constant play on public

Constant play in private.

Have both and play which ever you fancy that day.
