Not sure how to survive in this game

I started with 1 painkiller, 1 bandage, and a flashlight. I start moving along the coast to the towns so I can actually find a weapon and it ended up with me running down the street along all the towns with about 3-5 zombies running after me. Where else can I find something to protect myself from zombies.

Well i suggest, as soon as u have food and Drink, run away from the coast and check the little Hunting stands or Barns on Farms!

But the Farms definetly my all time favourite, they like a huge Goldmine! :D

dont run, press x or z to crouch/prone and hold shift to walk and that will help avoid zombies, also avoid other players, most are shoot on sight.

When you´ve been in a town, searching for loot and 3-5 zeds chasing you, you have done something wrong. Be more carful, sneak better.

Sneaking is definitely the key - either prone (Z) or crouch (X). Tap shift to sneak instead of running full speed.

Keep a constant eye out, looking around.

Always play with sound on - if you can hear a zombie but can't see it yet, check out the situation properly before blindly running in.

Look at some of the online maps that highlight various spawn points so you're not wasting your time checking out fruitless spots.

Until you can gather your own matches and become self-sufficient food-wise, collect as much food/beverages as you can reasonably carry.
